8RDA+ fails to boot with Powercolor 9800 Pro

Hi guys... and gals if theres any around )

I received my new Powercolor 9800 Pro card today, unfortunately the system will
not initialise (ie. dead, no video, no beep.. nothing) put my 4600 card back in
and alls well.

I've tried another power patch lead, plus 2 other 400watt power supplies, reset
the cmos to defaults etc. etc. even tried the board out of the case with just
the video card.. still the same.

However, strangely the card works when I tried it in my wifes older system which
uses the old 8KTA3+ board although it does show what looks like a crosshatch
pattern across the screen when XP loads up but this may be down to the fact that
there's no drivers loaded, at least... the m/c would boot up. Yes I did try her
P/supply on my system... just in case.

A friend came around with his system this evening so I could try the card in his
m/c. He has a 8RDA3 board installed and normally runs with a 9700 Pro with no
probs. His m/c would not boot either when my 9800 card was installed, I noticed
that both m/cs were giving the same error code on the diag display 1d.
The manual states this is 'Initial EARLY_PM_INIT switch' for the code 1D (note
the case difference) but I've no idea what this error means. The card was bought
from Overclockers UK and they are blaming EPOX and EPOX tell me there are no
compatibility probs between the two. It looks like the card will have to be
returned regardless as theres certainly an issue with this particular card and
these 2 particular boards.
Any suggestions which I may have overlooked.

Saw a post with this elsewhere but cannot remember exact details - something
to do with power management in the bios and switching DPMS support to blank
screen? Sorry this isnt an answer but maybe its a lead? If I can remember
more I'll repost but dont hold your breath willya. Shawk.

You are in fact correct... I came across that post when I was searching using
Google. its in the following thread.

Needless to say I did try this, especiallyas I noted that the guy was using the
same motherboard (8RDA+) I've tried most of the settings in the bios that I
thought may be relevant just in case, but sadly no joy.

Funny enough... another Pal tried his 9800 Pro in my system and it worked fine
(different make) and mine worked in his but he was a little reluctant to swap
<g> I'm taking it back to OverClockers UK on friday. May swap for the MSI 5900
instead. There does seem to be quite a few users getting probs with the Highend
ATI cards, or maybe its just my imagination.

John - sorry it didnt help. I would REALLY read all the reviews before
buying a 5900. The next gen cards may be OK but the ATI cards do appear to
be the only current way to go. (If you are) dont base your decision on the
posts here. Dont forget most of the people that post on here only do so
because they have a problem - the millions of satisfied users will probably
never have any reason to even log onto this group.

I'll pass my judgment on that until after tomorrow, but I have seen them get
some bad press in the past. I'm now retired with lots of time on my hands and
also have a permanent cable net connection so if I get any grief I'll be more
than happy to ruin their internet business by devoting the rest of my life
stirring the nasty stuff for them. Luckily my daughter also works for trading
standards in Preston so that may come in handy )

Under the 'Sales of Goods Act 1979 with the Distance Sales of Goods Act
Amendment 2003' you have 1 week to return the said goods if you are not
satisfied as long as those goods are in their original condition. I have not
opened any CD's... all are still sealed and the item is still like new so they
have no alternative but to replace it for another or alternative item.

We shall see!! ;-)
