892130 - WGA

JD

Windows Update gives me a message "To use Microsoft Update, you must
first install the latest version of some Windows components.", and
offers a download of kb892130. It does not install because WGA
is already installed. However, it does not allow me to
download/install the current April patches.

Any help in correcting this situation would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

But between validation and using Windows/Microsoft Update, that adds two
unnecessary layers of code on top of the patching process, that can and
will go wrong.

Why waste time debugging MS's useless code, when you can update your OS
much more safely using Common Sense Computing.

Try the following workaround:

The WGA diagnostic tool has been updated to
to correct a problem seen by some users.
Please download and execute it from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try again.

Many thanks, Carey.

FYI, I'm not entirely unskilled, after actively using computers since
the days of punched card programming, but could not find anything on
the Microsoft site regarding the problem. Thank goodness for
helpers like yourself.

What does this executable do?

Its MGADiag.exe. It is suppose to validate WGA by determining
whether or not the version of Windows XP is valid. MGADiag.Exe
over-rules WGA.
