811493 Strikes Back

James Ke

Hello-
I know that the 811493 update has caused problems with many
computers (including mine) and Microsoft released a fix but I am still
having problems with it. Windows Update wants me to install the Update
Rollup 1 (KB826939) but that crashes my computer because it has the
811493 update in it. Ive tried everything (googling for fixes, changing
registry deals) but to no avail. Maybe I'm not doing something right. I
would like to fix this problem so i can install the entire Update Rollup
1 without any problems.

Thanks for your help!
James

The 811493 problem seems to be related to Norton and
hardware on your system. Disable Norton when
downloading/installing Windows Updates. Get the latest
patches for Norton.

Like you, I found that 811493 (in all its various releases) crashes my PC,
so I cannot install the KB826939 Rollup either. Fortunately, I do not
really need 811493 anyway.

What really concerns me is what happens when it gets incorporated into the
next service pack? No-one seems to be able to answer this...

Chris.

I don't use Norton, but I still have the 811493 problem.

Jim told you that you have hardware problems and
you keep going on and on. I have never had a problem
with any of the updates. EVER.
Another question, was your XP preinstalled?

Actually Jim said it *seemed* to be related to Norton *and* hardware to
which Chris replied he doesn't use Norton.

Meanwhile plenty of MS updates have caused problems since approx. the
release of XP. Off the top of my head there was - at the least - an OE
update, a Windows Script update, an MDAC update, an Internet Explorer
update. Those are ones I remember caused me problems, though there were
plenty that clearly caused problems for many others but not for me.

So what is the significance of your own good fortune with regard to an
update that Microsoft have acknowledged - originally, at least - did cause
problems?

Oh...I see.

1. I have a PC that has been very reliable for several years and (almost)
never crashes. Perfectly stable for days on end.

2. Install the 811493 software and the PC *always* crashes after 1-2 hours
use, regardless of what it may, or may not, be running at the time. Total
lockup.

3. Remove 811493 and the PC is perfectly stable again.

That automatically makes it a hardware fault, does it?
Any suggestions as to what?

I have never had a problem with any of the updates. EVER.

Right... So if YOU never have a problem with a particular piece of
software then anyone who does must have a hardware problem. That's good
reasoning...

Another question, was your XP preinstalled?

No.

Hello again-
I tried using the work arounds sugguested (Kelly's fix, Updating Norton
and disabling it during updates) and I still have the problem when 811
is on my machine. I know its not hardware because I can leave my machine
on for days (with 811 uninstalled) and not have a single problem. I too
share Chris's concern with the SP2 update having a buggy fix that causes
stability problems.
It seems I am out of luck on this one.

Thanks,
James
