802.1X and Rapid Re-Keying under Win 2000 Client.

Trying to get 802.1X working under Win 2000. The Access
Point is already 802.1X compliant. From what I've read and
know, when you upgrade to 802.1X under Win 2000, a
Microsoft utility is provided that replaces the vendors
security config utility. Typically the vendors util allows
you to turn on WEP and set the key on the card you are
using. Microsoft's replacement util allows you to receive
keys automatically. The keys can then be redistributed
every several minutes from the AP discouraging Wireless
hackers. Only requirement is the AP has to be 802.1X
compliant. No such window pops up. Still have the vendors
utility. No extra features, tabs are present to allow
automatic distribution of keys. Any ideas? Already at SP4.

Hi Dave,
There is some confusion on this. W2K SP4 or the Wireless Update only
provides the 802.1x functionality, it does not replace your current WEP
provider. It does not detect Wireless Access Points. WinXP does have
this built in feature and I believe that is were the confusion comes from.
XP provides the Wireless Zero configuration which will do everything, but
W2K only the 802.1x Auth portion.

FYI: after installing the patch or SP4 the Wireless Services is set to
disabled, you to go set it to automatic and start it to be able to use it.

Hope this Helps!

Thanks,
