8 min. start up in Windows XP

Newbie running Windows XP, SP 2, Processor Intel 2532 MHz, Total memory 512
MB, Available Physical Memory 64.29 MB, Virtual Memory 2.00 GB, Available
Virtual Memory 1.96 GB.

My hp pavilion 754 n is extremely slow on start up... taking about 8 minutes
to load..

I recently purchased and ran "Registry Mechanic" hoping this would correct
the problem; it did not. During start-up I get a "nwiz" error and an error
for "1-click Answers" program. Other than the slow boot my computer runs
fine. Any suggestion on how to shorten the long start up would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Try start>run>sfc /scannow and let it run. It might ask for the Windows CD
also. It checks all system files and corrects any that may be damaged. I
don't now if it will fix your problem but it is the first thing I do with my
computer when similar problems start.

I would suspect Registry Mechanic may prove not to be a good
investment.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

To run sfc / scannow you need a Window XP CD which includes the SP2
update. If your CD is pre SP2 you will need to create a slip streamed
copy of Windows XP with SP2 included. However, the problem could be
third party drivers not the drivers coming from Microsoft.

Please provide copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You might check to see if it is trying to find a network to boot to. If so,
it will time out before going on and booting from the hard drive. You should
be able to view the boot sequence from the CMOS setup screen. Depending on
which HP you have, it may be one of the "F" keys (F2 or F10, probably) or the
Del or Ins key pressed just as the machine first powers up. There _should_
be a prompt, but with an HP, you cannever tell.

Thank you for your assistance. After following your instructions, my Event
Viewer Log revealed (1) error.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 2/18/2007
Time: 2:07:48 PM
User: N/A
Computer: YOUR-6JNHHU0520
Description:
The mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

During the 8 minute boot, I also receive an error message that reads:
SetPoint. exe. Entry point not found. The procedure entry point.

After fully loaded, I opened the Device Manager and did not see any yellow
question marks.

After running "sigverif.exe" the File Signature Verification results listed
(7) entries
va720-2.icm
hpcljx02.hlp
hpcprd02.dll
hpcps02.ini
hpcstr02.dll
hpcui02.dll
hplj6p_4.ppd

Do the results define what the problem is?

The error report is indicating a problem with a driver for a Logitech
mouse. Are you currently using a Logitech mouse? If yes what specific
model?

Nearly all the unsigned drivers relate to a HP product. What HP
products / models do you have?

The va720-2.icm driver may relate to a Viewsonic VA720 monitor. Is
that what you have?

The results do not define the problem. They point to particular
drivers, which may be causing problems. Once each device has been
positively identied the solution is to see if an updated driver
exists. They frequently do. New hardware that is problematic gets
returned to the manufacturer for a refund so that there is a fairly
compelling reason for the manufacturer to provide an updated driver,
unless the product is out of productions and no customers can still
submit warranty claims. There is clearly a problem with your mouse.
The others are less certain.

I do have a wireless optic Logitech mouse.
I also have an two HP printers. A LaserJet 5mp and a HP Office Jet 6210 fax,
scanner, printer combo
I also have a View Sonic Monitor.

Unfortunately, I did not have an issue regarding the mouse until I purchased
a program (online) to update my drivers. I didn't realize (at the time) that
I downloaded and installed a driver for my mouse and a driver for a Logitech
keyboard (which I do not have).

For clarity sake, the (8 minute) slow start-up occurred prior to updating
any drivers.

To be certain of getting the correct drivers it can be necessary to
have very precise information regarding models. More on the mouse is
needed. Look on the underside of the mouse.

fine for posting small amounts of information into newsgroup messages
longer reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers. Given your
present problems you may fing copy and pasting not working with this

After trying to resolve the problem, I stumbled upon a suggestion that
stated: when all else fails, interrupt the start up (F8) and select Enable
Boot Logging to create a log of the boot-up sequence.

I did. In doing so, I discovered that seveal items failed to load.
Unfortunately, I don't understand the findings presented. Should anyone have
the patience to review this log, I've listed it below and would appreciate
learning what steps I need to take to resolve my slow boot issue.

If nothing is apparent to this newsgroup, I will contact Geeks. In the
meantime, thanks to everyone for your previous suggestions.

Hi Gerry,

I am having slow boot issues on my Compaq Presario similar to those
described by Mac. I have run "sigverif.exe" and have 2 usigned files.
'mdigraph.dll' and 'mdiui.dll'. What should I do with these?

Thanks in advance, Caztastrophe

Hi everyone out there who maybe able to help the predicament experienced on
my husband's computer. For several days he was getting the ntoskrnl.exe
warning on his computer and other error messages and this morning when he
booted up the Microsoft Windows splash screen appeared, as normal, but once
that had gone off he was left with just has a black screen. We were advised
to re-load his XP Professional disc but with the black screen it is
impossible to do anything, sooooo I tried getting into the operating system
by tapping 'del' whilst booting and tried to point the pc into booting up
from the XP disc but zilch, no matter how I try I don't seem to be able to
re-install/repair windows. I believe this to be as a result of the blasted
ntoskrnl and really don't know what to do anymore. My husband is at the
point of dispair because it is the main love of his life!!! Can anyone
please help?
