Clear DayNow that AMD & Intel are releasing to the consumer market 64bit
processors, is XP able to take advantage of this or do we all now need to
upgrade to "XP 64"??

Tony P

The current XP Home and Pro are 32 bit. To use the AMD or Intel 64 bit
processors will mean you will have to buy a new OS.

Neither the regular XP Professional nor Home takes advantage of
it. You can buy, at a substantially higher price, a version of XP
for the Intel Itanium processor. The AMD version is not out yet.

Nobody, of course, *needs* to upgrade. 64-bit processors are a
long way from replacing the 32-bit ones.

Interestingly, the new Apple Mac G5 ( the world's fastest, most powerful
personal computer) uses a 64bit CPU and yet the OS is 32bit. Perhaps the
same will apply for PCs.

Far from the world's fastest computer. They really rigged the results, looks
like in real life it can't even compete with a P4 3.0GHz :-)

As someone said elsewhere, there is a 64bit version for the Itanium (but
hardly aimed at the consumer, given all the things that don't run on
it). The Athlon-64 version isn't out yet, however the Athlon64 will run
the 32 bit version just fine (The Itanium struggles, since it doesn't
have native suppott for 32 bit instructions, iirc).

You don't NEED to do anything! Just stay as you are if you are happy. Of
course, if you want to get one of these new processors, when they are
readily available, feel free to get the 64 bit version of Windows (when it's
available). But you don't NEED to.

Thanks Crusty, I know I dont NEED to do anything just like you didn't NEED
to read & reply ! You a fan of "The Life of Brian" by any chance?

You asked a very specific question. Do we all "NEED" to now upgrade, didn't
you! I guess that was NOT really your question. If you want specifics, then
ask for specifics. Learn how to post a coherent question and you will get
relevant answers!

Well I guess you're not a crusty old bastard for nothing then! I dont recall
typing in caps the word "need". Stop being so patronising & pedantic. If my
post was so "incoherent" how were you able to read and reply to it. Its gits
like you that give newsgroups a bad name!

Have a nice day.

correct, a different version of xp is required.

its not intended for consumers, yet. no real need.

if ur so interested, u can buy the parts, and then load linux on it. that
supports 64-bit processing. but what kind of advice is that on a windows
group?
