64 bit PCI

What happens if I put a 64 bit PCI card into a 32 bit PCI slot, will it work
or will the smoke escape from the wires?

Well, where did you get that card? it's rare. What card is it?
Are you sure your PCI slot is 64 bit? I heard that most slot are 32 bit
only, but putting a 64 bit card in will still work.

A friend bought a room full of stuff at an auction, it was the workshop for
a computer company. It's a scsi card of some sort. I'm certain my PCI slot
is 32 bit but you are correct, a 64 bit PCI card will work in a 32 bit slot.

I read that like a year ago and looked into many motherboard manuals, they
usually mention that the PCI is a 32 bit thingy. I had never seen one with
64 bit crossing my eyes and i had asked some a old friend of mine, he said
that it's rare to see PCI implemented as 64 bit on ordinary PC motherboard.

Ordinary PC motherboards use a 32 bit PCI bus running at 33 Mhz.
64 bit PCI busses are used on server boards, mainly for SCSI adapters, and run at up to 133 Mhz.

I didn't know that. I previously thought they ran at only 33 or 66mhz. One
interesting thing I realised a while ago is that these things don't actually
run at 33, 66, 100 or 133mhz but at 33.3333 recuring, 66.6666 recuring etc.

It's PCI-x. It can also support a much faster bus clock than a normal PCI
slot.

Well in theory it's 33.3333, etc, recuring but in actuality
it's just a multiple of the clock generator which is never
going to be that precise.
