2. Microsoft Office 2003/2007 shortcuts wont open from the "recently opened
programs list" in the Start menu. No response. These type of shortcuts only
open from the start menu in the Office folder or the Desktop.
I can't open office applications if i search for them in 'start search'.
I've noticed by viewing the properties of shortcut of office files that
Office .lnk files are different from most.
Perhaps a missing or corrupt registry value or security software blocking
something?

3. DirectX Diagnostic Tools (dxdiag) stops working when dxdiag is run and
attempts to access DirectShow (test dxdiag does on start of program). DxDiag
says “DxDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing
DirectShow the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass
DirectShow this time?â€
If I click ‘Yes’ DxDiag appears to run normally. If I click ‘No’ DirectX
Diagnostic Tool crashes.

4. When I browse to a folder that has Video files (eg .avi) (especially if
there is many of them and they are large in size) I get the following error
coming up constantly. I think it might have something to do with windows
generating a preview.
I have DivX Installed.

I can't view my hard disk's properties! I can view the properties of my CD

6. Windows Live OneCare Safety Scan for Windows Vista doesn't work.

The application is located here:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/center/whatsnew.htm

I get this error message: "Windows Live OneCare safety scanner experienced
an error. Please close this scan and try again..."

Live Safety works in the RTM, so that sounds like an SP1 issue, as others
have said, report your issues using the BETA Client tool and in the
Microsoft Vista SP1 BETA newsgroups. There should also be a link on your
desktop about how to send in feedback, click it to follow instructions.

Okay, I wrote a reply once but it went off on it's own somewhere and the
fact that you have 6 problems not 3 changes the issue.

Let's see who else answers and take it from there, but I think you may
have reached a point where a reinstall may be the only escape.

Here is what I would do.

Copy to desktop latest drivers from TV card makers website and latest
drivers from Video card makers website. Your display will get messed up
so you need to make them easy to find.

Set Antivirus / Security software to NOT start with Windows
Reboot,
Uninstall TV card software / drivers using control panel add / remove
Remove TV card, observing static precautions.
Reboot
Locate and remove Video card drivers
Reboot
Go into BIOS and look for a setting Plug and Play OS Yes/No
Set to no
Save settings and Exit
Reinstall video card drivers which will probably reboot again.
Reset screen
Check to see if any of the problems have gone away. I rather doubt it
but who knows...

This just might resolve any hardware conflicts and fix the DXDiag
problem, if not then the install you have may be a lost cause.

First see if anyone else agrees with these suggestions.

You should restore the machine to a state prior to the introduction of the
Beta SP. There is no way I would ever use a beta anything. One should only
use the final release of a something, to avoid the problems you are having
at this time.

Those involved in the beta testing of Service Pack 1 for Vista have a
dedicated feedback channel for their use. Please report these problems
there. Remember, you are using beta code (you are part of the testing
procedure). No one has ever said that beta code is stable.

If you do not get any satisfaction through the official beta channels I
would suggest a clean install, unless you were thinking ahead and created a
system image prior to installing the beta code.

Except that his problems began BEFORE he installed the Beta which he
originally installed hoping for a fix, boy do some people here have
comprehension problems...

A wise suggestion but I am repeating this for the last time, his
problems began before the Beta. Much as I am wary of the latest trend
toward stealth installs I am getting even more concerned about the
possibility of bugs in a Beta manifesting themselves before it is
installed :)

Personally I think it may spring from some hardware conflict on PCI but
who knows, Quite likely that a clean install is the most economical in
terms of time, but will not produce any kind of diagnostics for future
adventures, especially if the same hardware remains in place and the
problem happens again.

Richard Urban

Yes, a clean install removes any chance for diagnostics or troubleshooting,
but in many cases it may be a faster alternative. If a Microsoft
representative (not a help desk technician) wanted to work with a person to
try to "really" get to the root of a problem", time and situation allowing,
I would certainly suggest the exercise.

Back in the early 90's I would purposefully destroy my system
installations - just so I could find out how to recover. I never found a
DOS/Windows 3.11 problem I could not work my way out of. But I was out of
work for 18 months and could not leave the phone during business hours -
just waiting for that one call, so time was not of critical importance to
me.

The newer operating systems sometimes leave no recourse, other than fresh
install or a system roll back.

If a person has a system image to go back to, the time saved is a no
brainer.

So, basically I am agreeing with you. Just another way to state it.

Wow little Richie, you sure love to blow your Net Cop whistle. Did you
get it personally from uncle Stevie Ballmer?

In fact a reinstall does have some less obvious benefits that may make
it more worthwhile, for one thing you tend to accumulate a number of
things you tried and never used etc, some things that get broken and of
course the experience of getting to know what is useful and what is not.
