551 relay error

We are having an issue with setting up an POP account on a remote users
laptop. We have an Exchange 2003 server running SMTP and POP. We setup the
remote host with an POP account with incoming mail.mycompany.com and outgoing
mail.mycomany.com. The mail is getting kicked back when the remote user send
a message to someone other than their domain. The message is 551 this is not
a relay host -mail must be to or from host domain. Thanks

Exchange issue, not Outlook. Exchange needs to be configured to either
allow relaying in general or to allow relaying for authenticated users. I'd
look at the Exchange groups to pick the right group for help.
