550 Authentication error

I occassionally get this error when I send email. I know the email address
is good and I can immediately resend to it and have it go through. What
causes this?
550 Authentication turned on in your email client.

What version of Outlook do you have? Have you turned on authentication to
your outgoing server (on the "Outgoing server" tab for your account)?

I'm running Outlook 2002 and I don't have authentication on the outgoing
server turned on.

In that case, I'd try turning it on and see if that fixes your problem. In
order to reduce spam, many ISPs require that you authenticate before you're
allowed to send to someone outside the ISP. Given the symptoms you
describe, I'm going to guess you want the "login to my incoming server
before sending" option.
