50 GB of Video clips GONE!!!

I'm having such a crisis. I had over 50 GB of video files on my computer that I taped off my TV with AT ALL IN WONDER. My original problem was that I was recording in ATI.vcr and I couldn't edit an ATI.vcr file with an video editing software. I found out how to convert the files to MPEG-2 format (as well as tape with my ATI program in MPEG-2 format). The problem was that I had over 50 GB of video clips that needed editing before I could burn them onto CD's
That's when I found ULEAD VideoStudio 7! It was perfect and simple to edit and splice clips so that they could fit onto CD's to burn them onto. So I downloaded the trial version and it was working great! Then the trial version stopped working before the 30-DAY trial for some reason. So I uninstalled the ULEAD program and resinstalled the trial version of ULEAD in hopes of the trial version working. I couldn't use the trial version anymore according to the program (I don't know why).
HERE'S WHERE THE PROBLEM CAME...............I uninstalled ULEAD from my computer, and amazingly, I noticed there was 50GB more of disk space on my C drive than I had before I unistalled. I Quickly looked to my video clips folder, and ALL MY FILES WERE GONE! I'm so devastated.......These are clips from the end of August through December that I took so much time and care taping. The only thing I can think of to explain the files being deleted is that when I reinstalled ULEAD, it must have automatically associated the ATI.vcr files (that I still needed to convert to MPEG-2 and edit) as ULEAD files. So when I uninstalled the program, it uninstalled the files along with it! I don't understand how the program vould do such a thing as uninstall files that were on the computer before it was there.......and why it didn't just change the files back to their original way before they were associated with ULEAD. I never checked the TV clips after I reinstalled ULEAD, so I am only guessing this is what happened

MY ACTIONS
Immediately I went to the Recycle Bin to see the Norton Protected Files in hopes that I could restore them, but it said the Norton Files were unavailable

The next thing I tried was SYSTEM RESTORE under the SYSTEM TOOLS section of the ACCESSORIES tab. I chose to restore the system to the event the my computer marked as ULEAD UNINSTALL. After the restoration....the files didn't come back. SO I undid the RESTORATION that I had just performed. Then I tried numerous marks that my system made as SYSTEM CHECKPOINTS. EVery time I tried restoring at another checkpoint (and after the computer went through the process and restarted) it said : YOUR COMPUTER CANNOT BE RESTORED TO (then it gives the date and name of the checkpoint). Then it says NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO YOUR COMPUTER

SOOOOOO.......I don't know what to do anymore? Does anyone know if it's still possible to get my 50GB of files? There has to be a way! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me out! Also, is there a number for MICROSOFT that I can call for TECH SUPPORT

Thank you very much for reading this post, and I'll forever be endebted to whoever can help me out with this crisis

Hi

If those files have gone you will need a 3rd party 'Undelete' program to try
and retrieve them:

System Restore doesn't monitor data files, so you wouldn't be able to
retrieve them that way.

Ummmm....smartass Jack.......that's what I was in the process of doing. My trial version of ULEAD ran up, so I uninstalled it from my computer to buy the real version and install that.......it somehow deleted my files along with it.

While what Will Denny wrote here is much better than "the other 'Jack's " answer..... I do believe that the undelete program best suited for your needs is the Undelete program from Norton .... as part of the utilites package...
Unlike the Executive software undelete program which I think requires to be installed prior to deleteing anything, so it knows what to look for and save in a separate directory.....the Norton Undelete's only requirement is .... I think this is correct..and if not the 'other Jack' will correct me Im sure....or at least give us another insight into his inability..
Anyway...Norton needs to know the directory, file name or extenison and you can add most everything else...If you hav
Norton professional....I think you will already have a copy of Undelete...
And if worse comes to worse.....try the dos prompt...... type undelete x.x where the x.x is the file name you want restored....... most of the "OLD" dos command lines still work regardless of the Win OS version your using..

hope this helps.

If your clips are on your c drive and you want to recover the maximum
amount then stop using it now. Your page file is probably on your c
drive and you don't want to be overwriting them, although it may not
vary much. And installing another prog to recover will also be a bad
thing for the same reason. Remove your C drive and slave it in to
another pc. Install your chosen recovery prog on to that PC's drive.
Any recovery prog will probably also need a separate drive on which to
place any recovered clips because it will not place them on the
original drive. So the second pc is going to need sufficient space.
Chances are you could have to buy another drive, which is always
useful for backup purposes - before accidents happen. If you cannot
use another pc then you'll have to risk suffering some loss by
installing another prog. And you'll need another drive.

I can't recommend much in the way of recovery progs. I've used
Powerquest's Lost and Found but it's no longer available. It also took
days.....and days, but it was reasonably successful.

Further to my previous post, you would do well to get another C drive
anyway, re-install everything and put the original drive aside for
now. Your clips are still on there and recoverable - eventually.
Putting a new drive and installation in will take the pressure off
you, preserve the clips, and give you a working pc with which to
research your problem and find some suitable recovery prog. You could
also use the new drive as the destination for the recovered clips.
Then move them elsewhere. It's a bad idea storing anything
irreplaceable on a C drive.
