5+ seconds to open new tab!

It literally takes more than five seconds to open a new tab in IE7. I have
recently installed the latest version of Java.

I would like to know if this behavior could be explained by:

a: Java
b: a registry setting related to IE
c: virus
d: malware

If this is a virus or malware, then I will look elsewhere for help, but I
figured I ask here if its due to java or another plugin or ActiveX control
that could be slowing the browser down.

One final note: After restarting Windows, if I open the browser and
immediately click the address bar or search bar, or open the My Favorites
menu, the focus on the browser is lost (causes the My Favorites menu to
close, or the address bar or search bar deselected) and then focus is
restored, so I have to open the menu again. Its like something takes control
of the browser when it is loaded (like something is loading into it). Could
this behavior be explained by a browser hijack?

Really looking for someone to point me in the right "troubleshooting"
direction.

Thanks

Not having any effect here, and I've installed the latest update too
b: a registry setting related to IE
Possible

c: virus
d: malware

Possible

Also look at any add-ons you have loaded - it could be one of those that is
causing the problem. First disable all add-ons (click the cog wheel icon, go
to Manage Add-ons, and choose Enable or Disable Add-ons), and see if it
helps. If it fixes it, enable each add-on one a time, testing after each -
hopefully you'll find the culprit this way.

If disabling add-ons doesn't solve it then it's possible something outside
IE is causing the problem - such as "security software" like a virus scanner
or personal firewall.

IIRC correctly, there are some problems with IE7 slowness when the
phishing filter is enabled. However, for help with IE7 you should post
in its newsgroup instead of here. The IE7 newsgroup is:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

There are a huge number of posts so it would be smart to start by going
to Google Groups Advanced Search. Use a search term that describes your
problem, constrain the search to the IE7 newsgroup and the date to very
recently. You can also check MVP Sandi Hardmeier's canonical IE7 site.
Sandi has workarounds, known issues, troubleshooting, and links. This
may be the only site you need.

And no, I'm sorry but I don't have your answer or I would tell you
now. ;-)
