"Overtook" in what way?
RedHat turned that "free OS" into a cash cow by charging as much for
server versions as Microsoft does. That's the only reason Dell has
interest in RedHat.

Redhat is not the only source for Linux. If you are basing your contention
that BSD/OSX "overtook" Linux on Redhat's sales figures you are
underestimating the installed base of Linux probably by an order of
magnitude or more.
