And once again, we will get two inferiour 'standards' instead of one
that works everywhere. This level of unfettered corporate greed
is one of the reason the world is in its present state...

And the old BETA vs VHS war comes to mind. The old saying you learn
from the past mistake obviously doesn't apply when greed is the main
factor.

The only people who get flamed are the net nazis who think top
posting is improper. Usually they are Linux-OS/2 freaks.

Two words for DL---- TOOOOOOOO SSSSSSLLLOWWWWWWW!

Another two words- VERY EXPEN$$$$$$$IVE!

They never caught on. I saw a 25 pack of 2.4x for 99.99 at comp USA.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
When ppl brun at 8x in 15 minutes max, then have to wait 1.5 hours to burn
9.4 gigs, they flat out give up..

Then, there is the failure rate,,,,which is high and costs minimum 4.00/
disk for a coaster.

It was "in between" technology,,, not ready for prime-time,, kinda like the
palm-cell phones that really aren't a palm pilot and don't work well as a
phone. They are getting better. I saw the new TREOS and wow.

Go back to the drawing board with DL,,, they suck and nobody wants them.
Now, if you can come out with a 8x DL, that would work,, and oh ya, they
shouldn't cost more than 2.00 each.

In this case Microsoft must have been lying about the market share and
that the percentage of OS/2 and Linux really account for more than 50%
of OS market with Winblows taking only 5%.

Oh and another thing: for your persistient top posting habit, *PLONK*

So owners of IP in either camp should give up that position for the good of
the consumer? Maybe they should just Fedex products to your house for free,
too.

If it means that they'll sell 10X as many then, maybe so.

Even better. 8)

I completely agree. DL is a bad joke. It is only on the market
because management wanted it. No good engineer would make a
product that bad without a lot of pressure....

Bullshit, plenty of consumers want it because its the same size as
the manufactured DVDs so thats more convenient when copying them.

It isnt that bad in practice.

Convenient if you can swallow the $4 coasters once in a while. I
don't have any DL burner and I'm not going to gfet one anytime soon as
it's very slow and touchy. I'll wait another year, maybe by then they
found a way to make DL coaster-proof.
It isnt that bad in practice.

Still waiting for a cheap external USB/Firewire hard that that can be
left on 24/7 without crapping out. Many cheap external drives don't
have a fan, lousy ventilation, and runs too hot to be used without
fan or proper vents.

You dont get that with a decent burner.
I don't have any DL burner and I'm not going to gfet one anytime soon

No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to get one.

I was JUST commenting on that silly claim that they're
only buyable because management wanted them.

In fact there is a significant market for them, as I said.
as it's very slow

Crunching the commercial DVD to a single SL DVD is even slower.

See above.

Completely trivial to organise enough cooling for one yourself.
Many cheap external drives don't have a fan, lousy ventilation,

Dont buy those, stupid.

Then buy one that has those, stupid.

I agree. Scrolling, looking for the new text is a pain.

Another easy way is to simply cut all the old text away.

And top posting has been frowned upon long long before Linux, OS/2,
and when MS's only operating system was DOS 2.0. Gawd I've been
on the 'net far too long.

Conservative slime bag (for not supporting AMD and using Intel
exclusively) Michael Dell has just invested $99 million in Red Hat.
Gives you an idea of the impact Linux is having when you can get
a stolid joke like him to invest.

That's why you're supposed to cut out the other stuff you're not directly
replying to. There's no reason to include the whole post if you're only
commenting about one particular sentence or paragraph.

Besides, for everyone else, it won't make sense if they read the reply
before the original material.

Well they can read old posts or scroll up from the bottom, it doesnt bother
me to do so in groups that top post. But that is my opinion and I dont want
to get into a top vs bottom post argument. I go with the flow, in this
group it is bottom posting so that is what i do.

Linux, the "free OS" that was supposed to wipe out Windows, according to the
zealots.

It turns out BSD/OSX overtook Linux years ago, and Windows is still going
strong.

RedHat turned that "free OS" into a cash cow by charging as much for server
versions as Microsoft does. That's the only reason Dell has interest in
RedHat.

Proof ? considering bsd is generally accepted as Linux I would be
amused to hear hear you definition
and Windows is still going
Questionable , still in use yes but going is the time between problems .

Support is charged for yes but so what , you expect it for free ?
