401 Error on password protected sites - HELP!

Please can someone help. I am experiencing the problem
detailed on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
kbid=821814 - and I can't find any help from MSFT without
having Passport :-(

The following patch - Q831167 - DOES NOT solve the problem.
