4.7 vs 6.1

I downloaded a new version of messenger 6.1, thinking
that it would update or remove 4.7. Now my computer
automatically selects 4.7. I have to sign off and then
sign in with 6.1...How do i get rid of 4.7? any takers?
thanks,

;)

I just posted about the same thing. The only inelegant (but effective) way I
have found is to rename the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder e.g. to call
it MessengerDead.

I have found that even if I disable sign-on it *still* signs-on. I can't
quite fathom how MS haven't realised that people will be running two
versions, and what a pain it is having them run together.

Greetings Thomas,

To disable Windows Messenger (which is what 4.7 is, *not* MSN Messenger), open it up (click
Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and
uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts'
(depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow
Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows
Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Applicaiton Sharing will
continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

In fact scratch my last reply, I've just seen that you can uninstall it with
SP1a. Sorted!

why doesnt microsoft resolve this by making msn and
windows messengers compatible?? i cant tell you how much
time i wasted trying to figure out why i couldnt have
audio conversations. there should at a minimum be a error
message stating that "the person you are attempting to
talk to is using MSN MESSENGER 6.1, not WINDOWS MESSENGER
4.7. Please disable WINDOWS MESSENGER 4.7 and install MSN
MESSENGER 6.1 to have audio conversations." something
like that, not just "so and so has accepted your request
for an audio conversation" immediately followed
by "connection canceled". VERY CONFUSING lol. btw,
typing, of course, is not affected by this.
