While booting my HP 4500xe laptop the boot process hangs
at the XP logo screen. I have tried everything and have
poured over newsgroups and knoledge base articles.
Nothing for this? I have tried in safe mode and still
hangs at same place. Can someone please help?

Thank you in advance.

It depends....do you have HP recovery cd's or a retail
version of XP?
If you have the recovery cd's you will need to download
the setup boot disks to try to fix your problem.
Here is the link:
Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks

Download the appropriate set. Either XP Home or XP Pro.
IF you have SP1 installed choose the SP1 disk set.
Once you have it downloaded run the file to create the
disks. You will need 6 spare floppies.
Boot from these disks and enter recovery console when
prompted. Once in there type in the following:
chkdsk /r and hit enter.
Let it run. May take awhile.
If that fails to solve the problem try this article.

Thanks for your response. I have the HP recovery discs
and have started to run those. Because of my impatience I
ran the HP recovery discs thinking they would do that,
recover. I have the sinking suspision that I am wiping
out all of my files and reinstalling everything
over/clean. Is this the case? Should I stop this process
Im only on disc 2 of 6. Am I too late??? arghhhhhh....

Thank you

I would suspect you are too late, if you stop the process now the PC will be
corrupted. If you didn't backup your important files the chances are they
are already lost.

You are definitely too late. Just do a complete restore of Windows at
this point unless the data (which I can guess you didn't back up) is
crucial. If the data is crucial to your life, stop everything and
contact DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com) for data recovery services.
