Windows 2000 Server at SP4 with all latest updates from Windows Update
as of 1/8/06. Can no longer login at console. Password secured
screensaver active. Upon attempt to login, get window to enter
password from screensaver lock. Proper password entered, window goes
asway and only the desktop background pattern is presented and then
nothing until screensaver reactivates at some time after the setting
for kick in. Server functions working properly as network users can
access server functions. Can login as administrator using remote
desktop from a Win XP client. Any ideas on how to correct problem?
Thanks!

New Comments:

Problem now seems to be related with deactivating the password
protected screensaver. Via RDT, I logged in as Administrator and
turned screensaver off and logged out. After some unknown period of
time (overnight), the problem corrected itself and I could logon at
the console. Today, however, I reactivated the screensaver with
password protection and the problem reappeared. The hang happens
after entering the password to clear the screensaver lockout. Any
ideas on how to correct? Thanks!

New Comments (1/17/06):

Server console has now been hung in the "logon" process ater entering
the screensaver password for over 3 days. All that is being displayed
is the logon user's desktop background. Server functions continue to
run properly. Sure would like some help in resolving this issue.
Restarting clears the problem but it comes back the next time the
screensaver kicks in. Thanks.

It's possible the screensaver file is corrupt, try using a different
screensaver.

I spent some time yesterday and last night researching and testing.
The screensaver was not the problem. Problem was having Removable
Storage Manager active. I stopped the service and set it to manual.
Now the server is acting normal again. Is RSM required to be active
for any normal function? What does it do? The server does have an
internal scsi tape drive and two full-time connected external USB hard
drives. NTBackup is used for system state backups to one of the USB
drives and BackupExec 10 is used for data backup to the same USB
drive. The other USB drive is used for "archiving" a Friday backup
for 5 weeks. The tape drive is presently not being used.

Last night's BE backup to the USB drive ran properly with RSM not
active. So, it would seem it is not required to be.

Oh, I also removed and reinstalled the Veritas tape driver as well as
updated the USB 2.0 card drivers.

Thanks!
