3D graphics tend to be jumpy

I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP on a new computer, and I'm
finding that the 3D graphics are very jumpy in several places, including
some, but not all 3D-oriented games, and in the standard 3D Windows
screensavers.

In 3D Flowerbox, for example, the object will constantly "jump ahead" for a
frame and then back, causing it to almost flicker across the screen. If I
reboot, the problem goes away for a while, but gradually creeps back and gets
worse and worse the longer I go without rebooting.

I'm using a GeForce 8600 GTS with the latest video and DirectX drivers on an
AMD Athlon 64 6000 Dual Core Processor, with 2 GB of RAM.

Any help is much appreciated!

For the Direct3D tests, the spinning cube looked fine, though my screen did
flash white a couple of times during the second and third tests.

Did you install the DirectX November re-distributable yet? It updates
some DirectX files that are way old on a clean XP SP1 or SP2 install:
