30 second delay connecting to internet

This is intermittent, but started happening 1 week ago.

When I go to a web site, the PC will freeze for about 20- 30 seconds( give
or take), and then finally connects.The blue bar at bottom just stops, then
finally connects. This is immediately after a reboot also. Sometimes the
connection just drops. I'm using WIN98, IE6 and have 256MB ram with 95% free
resources and no virii or spyware. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Problem still occurs.
I have the latest urlmon.dll file installed per the web link. Also, I have
no unused network cards. I'm using Comcast broadband. My network properties
setting was set for 'obtain IP address automatically' and I changed it to
'specify an IP address' using the 192.168 etc parameters. This was no good
as IE6 would immediately display 'page not found' and wouldn't even connect
to internet. I put the setting back to Obtain Auto and it connected ( but
still very slowly again with a freeze up for 20 seconds). I notice many
people have started to get this similar connection problem in the last week
or two.
Can it have something to do with a host file or similar type of setting? Any
other ideas? Thanks. Steve

I recall reading, since our conversation, about problems with the Comcast
servers. I think we will assume that your problems relate to that, unless
you post back.

Sandi,

I believe I have found the solution( unless it was perfect timing with the
Comcast servers problem). I did an online scan using TrendMicro's Housecall
scanner and it found the Java Bytever A, B, C etc virus in the Java
subdirectories. I deleted them ( you can also use the Java applet in control
panel) and the problem immediately went away. I and other people have
wondered why only Housecall finds this problem. Norton wouldn't find them
even with latest updates, nor Ad-aware, Spyware busters etc. The problem
occurred again 2 days later and I cleaned the Java cache and again the
problem immediately went away.

I wrote a post above on Apr 8 titled "Here is info/solution for IE freezing
up" to help others with this recommendation. No one is posting back to it
though. Everyone should try this. Be sure to add this to your arsenal of
recommendations. This certainly is a very busy newsgroup. There are so many
similar threads about IE freezing/connection problems that I guess people
aren't reading all the posts. Thanks again and let me know what you think of
this info.
