3 Personal Folders

Bob S

I have 3 copies of the same "Personal Folders" folder. They are all 3
exactly the same. When I right click on one of them to close it, the option
is greyed out. How can I get rid of the extra two copies?

To remove extra PST(s) from the folder list:

Outlook 97 or Outlook 98/2000 (Corporate Mode)
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Highlight Personal Folders service you want to remove and click "Remove".

Note: Standalone users require 1 Personal Folders Service. Those connecting
to an Exchange server normally do not use a Personal Folders file when mail
is kept on the server.

Outlook 98/2000 (IMO [Internet Mail Only] Mode)
- On the View menu, click Folder List.
- Right click on the root folder of a folder list.
- Right click on the root of the extra set of Personal Folders and choose
"Disconnect" or "Close".

For the most stubborn of PSTs that will not remove from the folder list.

IMPORTANT: The following information contains information about editing the
registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy
of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in
the Windows folder.

- Start RegEdit (Win9x/NT) or RegEdt32 (NT).
- Navigate to:
* Win9x users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
MessagingSubsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
* WinNT users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WindowsMessaging Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
- Look in the tree under that point (it should be full of keys with long
hexidecimal value names) and look for a section that references the PST file
you want off of your folder tree. Export that section (for safety) and then
delete it.

Thank you Milly,

I forgot to mention that I am using Outlook 2003. How would you do this in
OL 2003? Thanks again.

If you can't get rid of the extras through File | Data File Management
either, the next easiest thing to do is just create a new mail profile.
(You can still edit the registry, but if you mess it up, you'll end up
having to create a new profile anyway. <g>)

You can create a new profile via Control Panel | Mail | Show Profiles.

Thanks Jocelyn. Creating a new profile was what I needed to do. It worked.

Hello

I have the same problem in Outlook 2003 on WindowsXP. The
technique below does not seem to work for it. Any
suggestions?

I also tried the registry editing but at the specified
key location (used the one for NT), there are no
references to pst files (or ones that I can understand)

Any help would be appreciated! If possible please also
respond to (e-mail address removed)
