After reading a lot of messages here, I am looking at buying
these 3 books... anything else I should look at?

Beginning
Microsoft® Visual Basic® .NET Step by Step Michael Halvorson
http://www.visualbasicbooks.com/vbsteprev.html

Reference
Visual Basic.Net Francesco Balena
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735613753/ref=nosim/visualbasicbookr/103-8760123-5543005

Database
http://www.visualbasicbooks.com/dataaccessvbnetrev.html

Since my 1st project is going to be working with an Access 97
database, I am particularly interested if anyone has a different
book I should look at for VB.Net database programming?

the Balena is probably one of the best references out there for VB.NET,
ADO.NET book by MS Press is also very good

I have the Balena Book ,,, it is great ,,,it is a complete reference

i would recomend you to fist buy the Balena Book ( as it is the official MS
press core reference Guide for VB.Net ) and in the ocassion that after you
read this book you need more info nuy others
however in my experience you will only need specialized books beside this
one ( like if you are starting a remoting project etc etc and need some
specific detailled info )
