2PCs/crossover problems

I am trying to follow XPs Help pages to make a
LAN/internet setup between just 2 computers at home. It is
very confusing, and I think MS have got some information
wrong, or missed some out.

1. They mention network adapters, external and internal,
and that the latter sort is installed in a PCI expansion
slot. But no mention of Ethernet adapters built in to the
mobo, which is becoming commonplace these days, is it not?
2. They say Ethernet adapters must connect through a hub.
But no mention of a 2-computer setup which can surely form
a network with just an RJ-45 ethernet crossover cable, as
I have done?

Am I being stupid, or is MS being narrowminded?

I have got so far along this damned tortuous setup path to
have succesfully pinged 127.0.0.1, my own ISPIP and my
putative client on 192.168.0.2 to convince me that MS have
managed to make their "Help" pages extremely Unhelpful,
and strewn several Red Herrings along the way.

The next hurdle is to solve the problem that the Client
cannot access MSHome and maybe I should contact the
administrator (which is me) - a search on Google reveals
that this is a fairly common problem - and that the Host
manages to recognise the existence of the Client under My
Network Places/Entire Network/MS Windows Network/MShome
but refuses to talk to it because maybe it is a restricted
area and only the administrator should permit access (MS
KnowledgeBase article on this).

One other thing. If you haven't got bored already, can
someone please tell me if I'm going wrong here: I've
unplugged the modem on the Client because it's pointless
to use it if all internet activity is going to be routed
through the Host, isn't it? But then MS Knowledge base
article 306126 says that on the Client I must open a "New
Connection" "manually" "using a broadband connection that
is always on", yet in consistently unhelpful "Help" they
say I can use a Dial-up 56Kbps modem (which is what I
have). So which modem do I use to setup the Client?

Oh and one more thing: it is so irritating to have
followed their instructions apparently succesfully and
pinged OK and got the Client recognised but with no
communication pssible, to suddenly find that my Network
connection suddenly starts dialling. Rubbing salt into the
wound I call it.

If anyone there can help a tiny bit with any of these
arcane areas I would be very grateful.

set a different IP on each PC 192.168.0.x
set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on both PC's?
If you plan on sharing the internet, the gateway PC will need a second NIC.
on the second PC set the Gateway to the IP address of the gateway PC

Jeff, thanks for that. I looked at an earlier thread in
this NG and found a very useful site
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm
lowered the protection level of ZonaAlarm Pro and have
made progress.
Now I click on the Client folder in Win Explorer and get a
password prompt, but I've not yet set a p/w on the very
new Client computer, I'll raise this in a new thread.
