2nd request: Can't Boot to Safe Mode

David Lipman in Security NG told me to boot to safe mode and run his
Multi AV checker. I cannot get to safe mode. I select safe mode at
bootup, but it freezes at MUP.SYS. I asked David hos to get SAFE MODE
to load up, and he said to ask in a more appropriate newsgroup.

I asked here. Now I'm making a second request. Please, why can't I
boot into SAFE MODE, and how do I fix it? I have to scan and get rid
of a trojan.

Thank you.

I'm using Win MCE 2005/XP Pro -- I cannot boot into safe mode anymore.
The system freezes at MUP.SYS. It's stayed frozen for 4 hours.

How can I boot into safe mode?

Thank you.

It's a good bet that if your first request, two days ago, was not answered
then it can't be answered today either.

No, I do not need a repair install of Windows XP.

If someone could help me BOOT TO SAFE MODE, I would be just fine.
Thank you.

Don't post any 3rd requests: You're ignoring good, useful advice out of
hand. That'll slow down your assistance gathering efforts.

I didn't shout. Or is this a case of being too lazy to posit your post so
the proper person reads it? You resonded to the wrong person AND neglected
to indicate the post was off topic.

just plain rob

Assuming you ARE booting into full mode, I would pop the original installer disc into the CD drive, then:
Click Run > type
cmd (enter)
sfc /scannow (enter) [there's a space there]
This checks your system files for corruption and will swap in the proper file using a checksum. That could
clean this up and get you to reboot into Safe Mode.

Later, try fixing your drive letters with Tweak UI from Msoft. Make sure you get the right version for your
system.

Good luck.

That's a great suggestion -- but my original discs are factory-restore
disks that would wipe out the whole partition. I borrowed MCE disks
and ran sfc /scannow, but sfc rejected them; it wants "Xp Professional
Disc #2." So I'm about out of ideas.
