(2nd attempt) How to freeze and scroll boot-up screen?

Apologies if this post is duplicated, but my first attempt over 1 hr
ago has not shown up on my computer...

I do not want to enter Set Up, but am just curious to see exactly what
appears on the screen during boot-up, as it might be useful one day!
I remember being able to do it in Win98se but cannot remember how.
Can it be done in XP Home, please?

push the f8 key before windows boots up
I forget What the menu will give you but one shows all processes as
they boot.
