Rather than reaching for your hemlock flask, try this as a
first step:
- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000/XP PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD
to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy
- Report the results here.

When you reformatted the drive you lost everything on it. What made you
think it would still be there?

You'll have to start from the beginning and reinstall everything.

Well, I missed the formatting bit . . .

I recommend you ask a friend to assist you, someone
who knows his way with PCs.

Hi

After reformat the Hdd, you should lose everything

First, make sure your mobo BIOS can support 250GB Hdd
If yes, boot from the XP CD, select delete all partitions and perform a clean installation of XP
Since you can only enable 48 bit LBA support after installed SP1, I would suggest you to format and partition the C drive from 20GB upto 137GB. After XP is successfully loaded, install SP1 and then use disk management to partition and format the free space on the Hdd to your desire

How to Enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows X
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;30301

Note: I assumed that SP1 is not included in your XP CD. The new release of XP CD have already included SP1

Or you can use 3rd party software to resize the C drive to a single large partition to its full size of 250GB, Partition Magic 8.0 from powerquest.com is a good choice

Hope it helps

Pete

NTLDR missing troubleshooting Steps
====================================
Cause
-----
1.Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2.Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
3.Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
4.Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5.Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

Solution (Step by step)
=======================

Step 1
-------
CHeck all the drives and look if there is any non-bootable disk of any
kind (both floppy and CD).

STep 2
------
CHeck if the Hard drive is properly setup in BIOS. Try resetting the
BIOS to default settings.

Step 3
-------
Using the Recovery Console, copy the following files from

copy <CD drive letter :\>i386\ntldr c:
copy <CD drive letter :\>ntdetect.com c:

Step 4
------
Edit the boot.ini from the Recovery Console using the bootcfg /rebuild
command.

Step 5
------
Open the System Chasis and check the Hard drive connections and
Cables.

If the error message persists, format and reinstall Windows XP.

4.Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5.Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

5 seems unlikely, given that the drive has to be read successfully in
order to boot MBR and PBR that looks for NTLDR
Solution (Step by step)
=======================
CHeck all the drives and look if there is any non-bootable disk of any
kind (both floppy and CD).

Also, check CMOS boot order. If set to (say) Diskette, CD and nil
else, with boot other devices set to Disabled, that will give you
problems (albeit not "where's NTLDR") even if no disks inserted.
CHeck if the Hard drive is properly setup in BIOS. Try resetting the
BIOS to default settings.

After noting all settings. Less destructive to redetect HD without
blowing all other settings away... your advice smells cowboy-ish :p
Using the Recovery Console, copy the following files from
copy <CD drive letter :\>i386\ntldr c:
copy <CD drive letter :\>ntdetect.com c:

You're assuming HD and file system are safe to write to, yet none of
the steps listed has verified this.
Edit the boot.ini from the Recovery Console using the bootcfg /rebuild
command.

That doesn't edit the file; it auto-rebuilds it
Open the System Chasis and check the Hard drive connections and
Cables.
If the error message persists, format and reinstall Windows XP.

Now THAT's really bad, cowboy advice. How about - check file system
and physical HD for errors? Evacuate data so that it's not lost?
There are more important things than just getting Windows to boot;
your advice here is more akin to the "not my problem" approach one
would expect from warranty support, which cares nil other than the
limited scope of what the warranty covers.

Mind you...

....it seems like Darwin has already taken the hindmost ;-)
