2000 Server crash from SP4 install

Adam

Was running windows update for someone last night.
Domain controller and Exchange server (2000) -- never
been updated (in like 2 years). I was running sp4 update
through terminal services. Was almost finished and went
to get coffee. When I returned the session had closed
itself. I went to actually get a look at the server.
Apparently rebooted itself (not a virus as I had that
problem licked already). It is getting to the end of the
colored Starting Windows 2000 Server screen and
rebooting. Stuck in loop. Recovery console ends up in
stop error. Last known good configuration and safe mode
goes back to reboot loop. All drives tested OK using
compaq array diagnostics (this server is a ProLiant
ML370). Anybody had this particular issue? Kind of in a
tight spot considering they walk in the door in 1 hour.
Thank--Adam

Try booting off the Windows 2000 CD and boot into recovery console. From
here you can manually remove SP4 by using this article:

825062 Service Pack 4 Permits You to Remove the Service Pack by Using the
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825062

If you contrinue to receive Stop errors when you try booting from the CD,
you may need to run some hardware diagnostics tests.
