2 unread mail messages

i keep getting this message under my login name from the login screen:

2 unread mail messages

i thought that maybe it had something to do with my hotmail account and
its connection to msn messenger, but i don't have any mail in that
inbox.

i thought it maybe had something to do with outlook express, but i
think that i uninstalled that windows component because i don't use it.

my girlfriend, the other account, used to have this appear under her
name with maybe 1 or 2 mail messages. we never could figure out what
it was, though it eventually went away.

it doesn't really bother me, but i'd like to know what this message is
referencing so i can figure out what the heck is going on.
