Hey guys!

Just got a new Dell PC a week ago. Everything has been great. With the odd
annoyances I couldn't get around myself. I disabled, Dell Support, a
bothersome "help" program that ended up changing the theme I had chosen.
Blinked non-stop for eons. Failed to fix what was a bogus problem. Any how,
onto my question...

Just yesterday, Wednesday EST, XP Home (the OS I'm using) required that I
shut down the PC a 2nd time to shut it down 4x. Only once yesterday did it
allow me to go through the shut down process one time. Then, it did it once
again today. One time it shut down almost immediately (2-3 sec wait). What's
up? Is there a fix?

I have run my McAfee Anti-Virus and Spyware programs. Nothing was found. I'm
guessing in the process of updating programs some file got corrupted perhaps?

Any how, I'd appreciate any help...besides this minor irritation this PC has
been running fine.

Have you had a spontaneous shutdown (hard to tell from your post)?
If so, have Dell give you a new machine.

Hi,

As per Dell Help and Support:

On a Dell system it will look like this: Start/Run/Regedit

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}\Instance\InitPropertyBag]

"CLSID"="{13709620-C279-11CE-A49E-444553540000}"
"method"="ShellExecute"
"Command"="Dell Solution Center"
"Param1"="c:\\Program Files\\Dell\\SolutionCenter\\DellSC.exe"

To return to XP Default, delete the Param1 line and modify the rest to
match:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}\Instance\InitPropertyBag]

"CLSID"="{13709620-C279-11CE-A49E-444553540000}"
"method"="Help"
"command"="@shell32.dll,-12709"

Once done hit refresh, then Help and Support. If you are needing to remove
the link under Run and modify Online Support via IE as well, post back.

On a side note: Would be very intested to know the relation between that
and your themes. That said, if it should be one of the 3D nature, you are
really needing to check with Dell. Though, MS has 3D MS-KB posts that do
relate to Hibernate and Sleep mode, I can't say that this has to do with
your shutdown issues.

Added info and checkpoints to consider:

Disable everything that reads 'Wake up' in the BIOS settings. Also, I have
seen this behavior if you have a CD/DVD in the drive during a shutdown.

What do you mean by a "spontaneous shutdown"? :)

Hello Kelly,

Thanks for the detailed help! Much appreciated! :)

I'll try your regedit suggestion first. I'll repost whether it works or not.
Not sure if I did leave a disc in the drive when powering down. If I had
known this could happen I wouldn't have done it. Actually I have a few times,
come to think of it, since I bought this PC. Oooooooooooops!!

Btw...you posted links for edits...have you tried them all? When I went to
your site to look at Line 76 it gives you 2 options to download vb files. XP
gave me a warning dialogue box telling me opening or downloading the file
might damage my PC. Should I ignore this? Of course I will only try this
after I've tried the regedit idea.

Can you explain how it works? It automatically ends tasks to enable a proper
shutdown? Can you expand on that and give me an example?

Thanks!! :)

Yes, I have tested each and every one numerous time and have tried them. As
for .vbs scripts:

Note (that is posted on the very top of my tweaks page: If your anti-virus
software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have
"Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not
malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Ending explorer.exe is needed within some of them. Nothing to worry about.

Hello Kelly,

You read correctly! I opened the regedit program. Closed it. Since then, the
problem has went away. It now shuts off after only one try. Has been great
for the past few days. Have turned on/off the PC maybe 3-4 times a day. :)

I did modify one command line. But thats about it. Any how, since everying
is now honky dory. I think I'll leave it as is and not bother with adding the
4th command line you suggested. I'm assuming nothing is going to happen if I
leave out the 4th line if it hasn't happened already.

"if it ain't broke..."

Thanks again! :)

As per Dell Help and Support:

On a Dell system it will look like this: Start/Run/Regedit

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}\Instance\InitPropertyBag]

"CLSID"="{13709620-C279-11CE-A49E-444553540000}"
"method"="ShellExecute"
"Command"="Dell Solution Center"
"Param1"="c:\\Program Files\\Dell\\SolutionCenter\\DellSC.exe"

To return to XP Default, delete the Param1 line and modify the rest to
match:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}\Instance\InitPropertyBag]

"CLSID"="{13709620-C279-11CE-A49E-444553540000}"
"method"="Help"
"command"="@shell32.dll,-12709"

Once done hit refresh, then Help and Support. If you are needing to
remove
the link under Run and modify Online Support via IE as well, post
back.

On a side note: Would be very intested to know the relation between
that
and your themes. That said, if it should be one of the 3D nature,
you
are
really needing to check with Dell. Though, MS has 3D MS-KB posts that
do
relate to Hibernate and Sleep mode, I can't say that this has to do
with
your shutdown issues.

Added info and checkpoints to consider:

Disable everything that reads 'Wake up' in the BIOS settings. Also, I
have
seen this behavior if you have a CD/DVD in the drive during a
shutdown.

Power the Computer Off or Reboot After Shutdown

This edit controls whether Windows should automatically power down or
reboot
your computer once it has finished the shutdown process.

Hey guys!

Just got a new Dell PC a week ago. Everything has been great. With
the
odd
annoyances I couldn't get around myself. I disabled, Dell Support, a
bothersome "help" program that ended up changing the theme I had
chosen.
Blinked non-stop for eons. Failed to fix what was a bogus problem.
Any
how,
onto my question...

Just yesterday, Wednesday EST, XP Home (the OS I'm using) required
that
I
shut down the PC a 2nd time to shut it down 4x. Only once yesterday
did
it
allow me to go through the shut down process one time. Then, it did
it
once
again today. One time it shut down almost immediately (2-3 sec
wait).
What's
up? Is there a fix?

I have run my McAfee Anti-Virus and Spyware programs. Nothing was
found.
I'm
guessing in the process of updating programs some file got corrupted
perhaps?

Any how, I'd appreciate any help...besides this minor irritation
this
PC
has
been running fine.

Most welcome and good words to go by...... :o)

Hello Kelly,

You read correctly! I opened the regedit program. Closed it. Since then,
the
problem has went away. It now shuts off after only one try. Has been great
for the past few days. Have turned on/off the PC maybe 3-4 times a day. :)

I did modify one command line. But thats about it. Any how, since everying
is now honky dory. I think I'll leave it as is and not bother with adding
the
4th command line you suggested. I'm assuming nothing is going to happen if
I
leave out the 4th line if it hasn't happened already.

"if it ain't broke..."

Thanks again! :)

Most welcome. Seems all is well? If so, don't worry about the rest. If
I
read your post incorrectly, please repost.

Thanks for replying Kelly.

I figured out how to modify a command line. But how do you add new
ones? I
followed your regedit advice...noticed I only had 3 command lines.
Didn't
have the Param1 one so I didn't have to worry about that one. Just need
to
add the 4th line you suggested.

Would you please give me step-by-step directions? And how would you
delete
a
command line?

Btw...funny thing happened. I opened regedit and followed your
directions
to
that file. Didn't alter it. And closed regedit. After that I could
close
XP
Home after 1 attempt. Haven't had a problem since. :)

Thanks!!

:

Yes, I have tested each and every one numerous time and have tried
them.
As
for .vbs scripts:

Note (that is posted on the very top of my tweaks page: If your
anti-virus
software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have
"Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not
malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Ending explorer.exe is needed within some of them. Nothing to worry
about.

Hello Kelly,

Thanks for the detailed help! Much appreciated! :)

I'll try your regedit suggestion first. I'll repost whether it works
or
not.
Not sure if I did leave a disc in the drive when powering down. If I
had
known this could happen I wouldn't have done it. Actually I have a
few
times,
come to think of it, since I bought this PC. Oooooooooooops!!

Btw...you posted links for edits...have you tried them all? When I
went
to
your site to look at Line 76 it gives you 2 options to download vb
files.
XP
gave me a warning dialogue box telling me opening or downloading the
file
might damage my PC. Should I ignore this? Of course I will only try
this
after I've tried the regedit idea.

Can you explain how it works? It automatically ends tasks to enable
a
proper
shutdown? Can you expand on that and give me an example?

Thanks!! :)
