blank screen and blinking

Hi,

This is the first time I am using a forum to try to fix my XP problem.

I was running a DVD when the picture froze. I close the DVD, restarted
the DVD by popping it in and out. The movie was good for 10 minutes
and it froze again.

This time I could shut it down. I finally did a hard shut down.

After that, I removed my DVD and try restarting. I gave me a blank
screen with a blinking cursor. My keyboard, mouse can't control
anything.

I tried to use my recovery disc and the PC is not reading it. What's
happening. How can I fix this?

HI Matt,

I can't get into the BIO screen. I tried hitting the delete key and
F12 but the screen stays on the blank screen with the blinking
cursor. I put the recovery CD but the PC can't read it.

Doing the recovery isn't going to help. From your description, the
computer has had a hardware failure. Since you mention "recovery disk",
I assume that you have some sort of OEM machine like an HP or a Sony.
Contact the OEM's tech support for repair/replacement if the machine is
still under warranty. If this is an older machine, take it to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).

You can try doing the hardware troubleshooting yourself, but success
depends on your level of computer skills and what tools, hardware,
software, etc. you have available.

The recovery console and/or formatting will not help with faulty
hardware. Those are software solutions. Because the OP's computer is
failing before the operating system is even loaded, this is not a
Windows issue.

I'll try that when I get home. When I 'power drain' the laptop...
this is done when I am in the blank screen with the blinking
cursor.. ? I'm surprise that it would take only a minute to drain all
the power. Once the power is drained, I just press enter? Don't I
have to plug back the power cable first?

HI,

Just to let everyone know. I finally brought my laptop back to the
retailer. The tech so right away that it was most probably a problem
with the mother board. When he booted up the PC, the screen had lots
of dots and a blinking cursor. Somehow he said its the mother board
and not the hard drive.

Thanks everyone for your comments!
