My brother has a clean install of Window XP on his computer at school, with
no updates. Immediately upon connecting online in order to get all the
necessary updates, he got the Natchi worm. So he unplugged and cleaned
everything up using the Symantec tool.

I'm going to go ahead and use Windows Update to save all the necessary
updates and burn them to CD so he can safely update his XP without going
online.

2 questions-

1) He is using a non-SP1 version of XP- is that the RTM version on the menu
list?
2) After downloading all of the 60+ updates, will I be able to install them
all first, and then restart the computer? Or will I have to install each one
separately with a separate restart? I'm pretty sure not all of them require
a restart, but for the ones that do, I'm asking. My hunch (and my hope) is
that I can do them all at once and get them all 'to work' with one restart.

Thank you very much in advance.

1) If your brother's computer does not have SP1 applied, then yes - he is
running the RTM version.

2) You should be able to opt out of rebooting after installing each patch.
I've done this a few times, but I normally reboot every few patches or so,
just to be on the safe side. I've never done the whole lot of them at once.

You may want to consider simply installing the MS03-039 patch, which will
patch against Blaster, Natchi, and a few new vulnerabilities recently
detected, and then applying the rest from WindowsUpdate.

You can get the MS03-039 patch here:

If you do many or all the updates at once, how will you know which one
screwed up your bro's computer, if or when it happens?

If an update asks for a restart I would do it. It and the next may not
relate to similar files, but if they did you can get in a horrid tangle,
and it is not worth the risk. I would really advise getting the
complete version of SP1 (the Network download, or on a CD) and install
that as one go, giving a consistent state, before adding the fairly
small number of essential updates to that

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help. I downloaded just the Blaster
fix to CD, applied it, and then did the rest via Windows Update, and
everything worked perfectly.

Again, thanks.
