2 probs: Internet explorer / outlook express

1) Whilst connected to the internet I got several pops up come up asking
me to download stuff. I didnt 'OK' any of it but one particular pop up
wouldn't go away so in the end I had to disconnect from the internet
and restart the computer. However when I clicked on Internet Explorer
it didnt make the usual high pitched connection noise that it usually
makes - but it still connected. I am pretty new to computers and am
concerned the lack of noise means it might be connecting to some other
server or something and charging me loads of money. The number that is
says its dialing is still the same as it was before though.

I have checked to see if the modem noise has been turned up the noise
off the speaker in modem properties but it's made no difference.

2) I am getting so much spam in my outlook express inbox that its
constantly searching for new mail: I literally get about 1 or more junk
emails every 10 or so seconds. Because its constantly searching for new
mail outlook is not able to send out my messgae to a newsgroup about
how to get rid of all the spam. What can I do? I only use outlook for
newsgroups really. How can I change my email address (seeing as its
tied up with my btopenworld internet account) so I no longer get any
spam. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase heeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!!!!

ps Ive already tried setting up some mail rules but these dont seem to
help.

Thanks!

it didnt make the usual high pitched connection noise
that it usually >makes - but it still connected.

----- as long as you're still connected, I wouldn't worry
about it. I don't know much about modems though... Try
a popup blocker (toolbar.google.com has one built in) and
spyware removal (security.kolla.de or
http://lavasoft.us/software/adaware) to help out with
those problems.
2) I am getting so much spam in my outlook express inbox
that its >constantly searching for new mail

------ check with your ISP Internet Service Provider) to
see if they have spam filters on their end. SpamAssassin
is the big one, used at many ISPs. You could also try
using spampal (www.spampal.com). It's free, and works
with o-express. Worked well for me until I switched on
SpamAssassin. Always double check the spam folder, since
non-spam is bound the end up there.

Good luck!
