2 PC network

I not able to connect 2 pcs with network cable. i tried
all posible vizards under winXP. I trying to connect
laptop with pc. network icon is red crossed. ping doesn't
work.
ping on local is working. shared catalogs are visible.
is there any softw. to test net card ?
windows sucks !

If there is no hub, switch or router in the connection, you must use a
CROSSOVER cable.

Not a standard Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable.
