2 OS

Cystal

Hi,

I installed my new WinXP. I followed all the steps,
however to my surprise, I found that I've 2 OS in my
comp. Meaning my win98 is in c-drive, and winXP is in d-
drive. What should I do?? How do I go about deleting my
win98?

Pls advice.

Thanks
Cystal

Hello Cystal,

Nice Job ! ... Some people try to do this on purpose and
can't get it done ! <SMILE>

Is you 'D" drive a separate hardware hdd or another
partition on the same hardware hdd?

If WINXP is on the same hardware hdd as WIN98, just boot
up to the WinXP CD and you will go thru a couple of
screens to get to where you are going to it install new
again and then you'll see two parititions.
- Just delete the one you don't want and then exit or
reboot.

If WINXP is on a different hardware hdd than WIN98,
simply remove your computer case, remove the cables and
swap the hdd's around.
- Don't forget about setting up the Master/Slave jumper
pins correctly on the hdd's while you are swapping,
otherwise you won't get it to boot up.
- After that is complete, boot it to the Desktop and open
up a Windows Explorer, look for the 'D' Drive and check
it to make sure it is the WIN98 installation.
- Remove any files from the hdd you want to keep and then
right click on the drive in the Windows Explorer and
format it.

If you would like to correspond further, simple select
one the email addresses above, which corresponds you
issue.

Sincerely,

Craig McIntosh

You need to start over.
a.. Backup all data, settings, passwords, downloaded programs, etc
anything that cannot be restored from other media.
b.. Use a Windows 98/Me startup disk to delete the non-dos partition.
c.. Boot from Startup Disk.
d.. Load FDISK by typing "fdisk.exe" at the "A" prompt without the quotes.
e.. Say yes to large disk support <Y-N>...........? [Y] ENTER
f.. Enter choice #3 to "Delete partition or Logical Dos Drive" Press ESC
to return to FDISK options
g.. Enter #4 to "Delete Non-DOS Partition". Select the Non-DOS partition
by typing the number and then ENTER. Press ESC to return to FDISK options.
Note you cannot delete a NON-DOS partition located inside an Extended
partition. You can use the DOS utility called delpart
http://michaelstevenstech.com/delpart.zip from a DOS boot up.
h.. Reboot using the floppy startup disk..
i.. Type at the DOS prompt: a:\ sys c You can use fdisk /status to
identify your partitions.
j.. Reboot into Win 98 and install XP . When give the choice, choose to
upgrade.

You must have a fresh install and now have a dual boot
system. When you start up, the are offerred a choice to
boot into w98 or wxp. The three files responsible for
this are ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini. You must keep all
these files in the root directory of your c: drive,
otherwise your system cannot boot into any windows. To
remove w98, first boot into wxp, then right click my
computer/properties/advanced/bootup and recovery (near the
bottom of the window) You can select the default window
and the time delay (could be zero second) and choose not
to display the boot menu. Reboot and test the effect. If
you are happy with the result, then delete the win98
directory in c:, keeping the three boot files intact!!

Hope this info is useful.

You took a New install, and thus set it up in the other partition, as a
dual boot. You have two courses:

Live with it on D, and remove the Windows folder with Win98 from C:.,
but leaving the XP boot files there (ntldr ntdetect.com and boot.ini in
the root of C:\). Then remove the reference in boot.ini by running
MSConfig.exe and on the Boot.ini page click Check All Paths.

Or go back and install XP afresh. Restore the standard 98 boot by
booting its floppy and using SYS C:
Boot the 98, delete the Windows folder with XP from D:, then run the XP
CD from the 98, this time taking Upgrade.
