2 networked Pc's

A

Andy Swan

I have 2 PC's,both with Win XP Pro.

The first pc has the internet connection, which is shared.
The second pc is able to pick up the internet from the
first, but I cannot get them to share any files.

The first pc can see the second pc but cannot access it.
The second pc has two network connections, the first one
is the Internet Gateway, and the second is the LAN, both
of which show traffic but the second pc cannot see the
first pc.

I have enabled sharing on both PC's on all the relevant
HDD's and CDROM's, I have run the Network Connection
Wizard, they have different names, different ip addresses
( which have been assigned by DHCP ) but I STILL cannot
get them to share any files !!

ARRGGH !! Please help !!

Having said what you have already said I'm sure you would
have thought of this. Do you have any firewall software
running? If you do run msconfig (start>run>msconfig) stop
them from running in the services & start up tab. It will
depend on you Firewall as to what these files are called.
The only help I can give you that is that it won't be a
Microsoft service.
Don't just close them as this doesn't always work.

Other reasons. Make sure you have the right protocols
setup on each pc. It sounds like the TCP/IP is set but
how about the actual file sharing protocol. (Lan Icon in
my network connections>properties>listed at bottom)

Couple of ideas for you see if it helps.

Anytime you want to access another computer on your
network, you have to make sure that the corrcet user
account has been setup on both machines. Let's say that
you want to connect to computer B from computer A. If you
are loged in as "Bob" in computer A, you have to also
setup a user account for Bob in computer B with the same
password. Another solution is that you setup same set of
user account and password in both machines.

If one computer is able to see the other computer, logialy
you have your network setup. You may not see both
computers in "My Network Places" but if you try to search
for them in Search>>Computers or People>>A Computer on the
network>> you will see both machines. You can also ping
the computers from your dos prompt if you have both
computers' ip addresses. Another way is to go to
Start>>Run and type in \\computername where computername
would be the name of the computer that you are looking for.

Overall, XP is the worst Microsoft Product ever released
when it comes to networking and problmes such as yours are
very common.
Hope this may help you.

Sorry Brian your wrong the log on name does not have to
be the same. They aren't the same on my 2 pcs and i don't
use the same password. It would make different users
access levels impossible if they had to be.
