2 hard drives need to switch one to master other to slave

i put a 2nd hard drive in another computer. the orig hard drive has windows
xp home edition the other hard drive has xp pro. i know you have to move the
pin in the back of the hard drive but i don't know where to put the pin as
far as master vs. slave. also i went under setup and change the 2nd hard
drive as primary but it didn't take. i have all my programs, docs etc on the
2nd hard drive and i would prefer to use that hard drive + it has more space
on it.

To change the master/slave - look on the drive. Most have the jumper
settings on the label. Otherwise look up the manufacturer and model on the
web and get the manual.

More than likely - you will have to perform a repair installation on Windows
XP since the hard drive was not originally paired up with the rest of the
hardware it is now combined with...

Please understand that this is a *much* more complicated process than simply
changing the position of "pins" on the back of your HDD. These "pins" are
the jumpers, but what you want to achieve needs a lot more attention than
changing the jumper position on your HDD.

As a least a start, it really would be helpful if you had a friend or
acquaintance who's familiar with HDD configurations as it involves moving a
HDD to another system. Is there someone who could assist you in this?

If the second drive was in another machine...
it's not going to work with your present configuration...
so just leave your system as it is,

If the 2nd drive is setup as master, but you want to change it to slave
the diagram should be right on the drive itself...
otherwise, just put it on the other ide channel and change the jumper on
your cd or dvd...
and also get an 80 wire cable

thanks philo, i had another thread about empty device manager that's why i
was trying to change around HDs. i don't have the patience so i won't
attempt i will just put it back in the other computer and hope for the best.

In my experience the label on the hard drive usually has a diagram showing
the various positions of the jumper to set the drive as master, slave or
single drive. Have a look and see if you can find it.
