180gxp noise " iiieeee" every once in a while

Hi!

I have two IBM/Hitachi 180GXP 60GB HDDs which I just have bought. I've
noticed
that they periodically (every 5-20 minutes or so) makes a strange
noise,
sounding like "iiiieee". The sound lasts for about 1-2 seconds. I've
had no
other problems with the drives so far, but I just want to know if it's
normal
that this HD model sounds like this? I've seen some people report that
they
also have this strange periodic noise from the 180GXP series, but then
others have reported that their drive *don't* make this noise. But
then
again those that haven't heard it maybe just have a too noisy computer
overall, so that the sound of the HD drowns in the noise from fans and
so
on?

Finally, is there anybody who knows *why* the drive makes this kind of
noise?

Both HDDs ( ones oct 2002 and ones feb 2003 have the same model
no,part no,Only the serial no. and the number under the long barcode
are different.

Also only seems to do this noise when they are in the case , out of
the case they dont?

TIA
steve

And have just been fanged on the bum by that design stupidity.

Yes.

Correct.

Very likely.

It appears that the drive is running its own tests
periodically, most likely as part of the SMART system.

You sure ? How hot do the drives get out of the case ?

If you're right on that, likely what the drive does
periodically resonates with the case with some cases
and thats why not everyone hears it in the case.

Crummy design to raise questions in the user's mind tho.

Likely bearing noise. My DMVS SCSI drives do that sometimes.
Sounds like window wipers running dry. It's a fading sound.

Try them upside down for a while.

It comes and goes.
Very likely.

Not with an "iiiieee" sound.

Try 3 screws instead of 4.

THATS THE SOUND, BRILLIANT , THAT PERFECTLY DESCRIBES THE SOUND>LIKE
LEAVING THE INTERMITTENT WIPE ON,AND EVERY 15SECS THEY SWEEP ACROSS
THE SCREEN AGAIN < AND ITS NOT WET ENOUGH TO USE THEM

THATS THE SOUND!!!
LIKE THE INTERMITTENT WIPE IS ON AND SWEEPS THE SCREEN EVERY 20SECS,
BUT THE SCREENS NOT WET ENOUGH TO USE THEM.

EXCELLENT WAY OF DISCRIBING IT.
THANK YOU.

will unwind the screws a turn / and prob remove 1.
It may not resolve it , but i am over the moon that some one has come
up with the best way to describe the sound.

many thanks
