ANOTHER Hitachi 180GXP GOES BAD!!!

And it's not my system. I've consistently had no problems with Seagate and
Western Digital drives in the same case. But went though THREE IBM 75GXP
drives, first one returned to the store, second and third RMA'd. On the
third RMA, they sent me back the 180GXP. Let it sit on the shelf for a few
months, as I really didn't need the capacity. Then last week, put it in
service. Five days later, I start having system freezes, and hearing the
dreaded constant seeking sound. Run the latest DFT and it finds bad
sectors. Opt to have it repair the sectors, only to have it come back and
say the whole drive is defective!!! Geez, why does IBM/Hitachi send crap
back when a drive is returned? Do they just send out what comes in? Not
going to bother anymore sending these drives back. Too much money and a
waste of time too. From now on, it's SEAGATE ALL THE WAY!!!

Never had a problem with an IBM drive, all worked and still working
fine, TROOOOOOOOOOOOL.

SEGATE are EVIL, they worship satan to get their reliability on their
drives :)

Never ceases to amaze me--some character goes through a half a dozen drives
but "it can't be the machine".

(bites the troll)

1) Run a S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring tool and find out
what temps you're running the drives at.

2) You don't say what the ambient temperature in the
room is, nor whether your drives have active airflow or
not.

3) Check your power-supply, marginal power will cause
problems with some devices but not others. Use a *good*
UPS that regulates the line voltage to protect from
spikes and brownouts.

(My experience with IBM Deskstars is that they are good
drives, but just like Maxtors, are finicky about
operating temperature and power quality. All of the
IBM's that I've killed I can point to either heat or
power as the culprit. And I've killed a few, maybe 1 in
5 of the ones that I've owned.)

(bites the troll)

I'm not a troll and I'm not making this stuff up. Anyway, was looking for
an excuse to buy a new case, as my current case had a just barely working
off/on switch. Bought an Antec Sonata case with 380 watt PS. The drives
mount a bit different. And perhaps the person who designed the case never
bothered to see if a ribbon cable could reach from the drive cage to the
motherboard. But made it all work, am getting good airflow, and the PS
seems nice too.

For whatever reason, I've had very bad luck with IBM drives. The first
75GXP was actually installed in a completely different case for a system I
was building as a Christmas present. During the install of Windows 2000,
the drive developed seek problems. Took it back to the store and exchanged
it for another. (drive #1)

That drive last for about 11 months before it too developed seek problems.
RMA'd to IBM and got a refurbed 75GXP in return. (drive #2)

Put this drive in a system I use for web surfing only. That drive lasted
maybe 6 months before it just died. BIOS wouldn't even see it. RMA'd that
one and got a refurbed 180GXP as a replacement. (drive#3) Thought I was
completely through with bad drives (and the 75GXP's) now. And the 180GXP
was 60GB while all the other drives were 45GB.

The drive sat in the shelf for maybe 6 months before I put it into service
last week. Seemed real fast and quiet. But then I started to notice some
bearing noise. Just something unusual. Wasn't that concerned as all
seemed ok. And then system freezes started. And that's when I noticed
that the HD light was on constantly and I could here numerous attempts to
seek for a sector.

Ran the DFT and it says that bad sectors have been detected and I had 2
options. Either try to erase the bad sectors or erase the whole disk. I
attempt to erase the bad sectors. That's when the DFT comes back and says
the whole drive is bad. Actually ran the DFT again on the drive last night
and erased the whole disk. Also ran the complete and full disk test.
Seemed to pass ok but I still think it's having seek problems. Just do not
trust the drive for anything now.

So anyway, to all those people who think I am a troll, it's not true. And
this isn't the case of all the drives being installed in 1 case with one
particular power supply, or with no air movement. No, these were different
cases, all with top quality power supplies, and good air flow. Just have
had bad luck with IBM/Hitachi drives. Getting a refurb drive back in
return for an RMA may be part of the problem. But again, I have
consistently have had excellent experience with Seagate drives. Maxtor
so-so. My latest experience with WD drives is that they are ok, but are
somewhat noisy. Never again will I buy a Hitachi drive. They are bad!!!!!
