16bit ms-dos virtual device driver

I have Windows XP with SP2 and I can no longer run any of my 16bit ms-dos
programs. I keep getting these two messages
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver
failed Dll initialization. (I have gotten this message before but could click
Ignore and the program would work no problem) the other message that pop's up
right after I click Ignore on the first message is
C:\WINDWOS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. And when I click Ignore on this
message it just closes down the program. I have tried to use the steps
provided by microsoft.com but cant seem to get anything to work. If anyone
has any clues or know's what to do please let me know at (e-mail address removed)
or (e-mail address removed).

Run the Program Compatablity Wizard

MS-DOS 6.22, an 8 bit computer operating system for the Personal Computer
was the last version, released in 1994.

Hi Cmalot and Flubber - Try this fix, courtesy of MVP Kelly Theiriot:

"This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

XP_Fix.EXE by TRF Systems, Inc.
http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/xp_fix.exe

More info here:

Error Message: MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#16bit"

If the VDD error persists after making Kelly's fix, then see here and do
EXACTLY what it says: Virtual Device Driver Error Message in 16-Bit MS-DOS
Subsystem http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q254914
NOTE: You MUST have Admin privileges and you MUST use Regedt32.exe

Or much easier, courtesy of Andrei "Ndi" Dobrin, you can download and try
this: http://www.ndi.ro/VDDFix.exe I haven't used this personally, but
it has been recommended to me. Use at your own risk.

Look in Windows\system32\autoexec.nt with NotePad. It *may* be that an
item has been added that XP just plain does not like - it should, apart
from *many* REM comments have no more than

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

and some SET lines. But it may be that you have some trojan that has
damaged it; there appears to be one that becomes sensitised by SP2. And
I have seen reports that this can happen if AVast Anti Virus is
installed. You can find a clean backup copy at windows\repair; copy it
across. But if there is such a trojan it will probably do the damage
again next boot
