1680x1050 with ATI 200M

Hi all,
I own a MSI S420 laptop computer with ATI 200M chipset (X300 o/b).
Recently I've acquired a 22" monitor designed for 1680x1050 display
resolution.

I have a trouble setting it up working with my laptop as an external monitor.
For some reason neither in XP nor Vista, the display setup does not show the
correct resolution among the options available.
The GPU is capable of displaying much larger resolutions. It allows me to
choose resolutions up to 2048x1536, but not the 1680x1050.

Check for the latest driver for that video card from ATI and
monitor driver for the monitor. (These drivers "talk" to
each other to enable different available resolutions.) If
they are already installed you will NOT be able to use the
desired resolution as the video driver would not support
that resolution. I had that issue when I went from a 1280 X
1024 monitor to a wide-screen monitor on my desktop. The
previous driver didn't go to that particular wide-screen
resolution but when I upgraded the driver the new resolution
was then available.

Not all drivers will run a video card at all resolutions.
To see what modes (resolutions) the video card is capable
of, right click a blank area of the desktop. Click
properties. Click Settings tab. Click Advanced button.
Click Monitor tab. Uncheck the button Hide modes..... then
click Apply. Click Adapter tab. Click List All Modes
button. Scroll the list to see if the resolution you want
shows. If not, the driver won't display the resolution.
(make sure you go back to Monitor tab and recheck the Hide
modes .... then click Apply again because if you don't you
may click a resolution that the monitor can't display and it
could cause your screen to go blank later.

Further to that, the monitor may have been provided with a driver file that
should be used rather than a Windows generic monitor driver. Check if the
manufacturer has an updated monitor driver available for download.

Just in case, don't set up the ATI driver in Clone mode, use Extended
desktop for the external monitor.

"Check for the latest driver for that video card from ATI and monitor driver
for the monitor. "
Did that. Unfortunately, drivers from ATI don't work, claiming that I have
the wrong hardware, while drivers from the manufacturer's site (MSI) don't
solve the problem...

By the way, I have he same problem in Vista as well.

In that case, if you followed my check of available
resolutions, you can't use the monitor in that resolution
with that laptop.

You need to download the "Integrated graphics" version of the ATI drivers.
Same start page for driver downloads, different sub-heading. The correct
drivers include neccessary chipset drivers for your motherboard for either
OS, or at least the graphics subsystem portion of them. The current driver
begins with "7-11-igp_"

Pick your OS version then Integrated/motherboard, then the Radeon
model -Xpress 200m.
