Video Card Problems

Hi all,
I have an older pc in my bedroom. Use it mostly for browsing the
internet. It had a ATI 9600 Pro video card. I went to upgrade it with
newest drivers and immediately thereafter the graphics would become
corrupted to the point that you couldn't even see the display
properly. I tried to remove the driver (both by hand and by add/
remove). Using Microsoft's vga.sys driver it was fine. Using ATI's it
would be ok for a minute or two and then corrupt. Tried older versions
of the driver and no luck. I threw in a 9800 pro from another machine
and it worked fine.
So I picked up a Nvidia GeForce FX5200 for pretty cheap. I tossed it
into the machine and it works at every resolution except the one I
want. (1680x1050) When I set it to 1680x1050 (this is the native
resolution of the monitor) the monitor shows the resolution as
1280x1024. The computer and the NVidia control panel thinks that it is
1680x1050 but in reality it is not. Temporarily I set it to 1440x900.
I really am not sure where to look for this. Wasn't really sure how to
easily describe the problem so that I can perform a search.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Thanks.

I've had FX 5200, 5500 and 6200, and I think 1680 x 1050 would be too much
for the 5200. Also the changes in many recent graphics card drivers don't
effect anything in such old cards, so there's often no benefit in updating.
You may have to keep looking for another old 9600 driver.

For ATI,locate june of 2006 drivers,version #8.263.0.0,locate in search
737 20767 This is the "control-panel" instead of complete catalyst, which
they
pushed for last 2 yrs.Control-panel with drivers only from 06/06 runs better

That might explain persistent problems with my set up, using a Radeon X 1950
Pro PCI, bought 8/07 and supplied with Catalyst, and XP Pro. I'll try the
older drivers too.

Thanks. I might throw the 9600pro back in there to try this out. I am
stumped on why the Nvidia will think it is at 1680x1050 but in
actuality it is outputting 1280x1024. That one has me scratching my
head.

Andrew, I couldn't find 737 20767 in a search. Best I've come up with is
FireGL v 8.163.1 Sept 30 2005, which includes Control Panel, and a June 1
2006 driver for 3ds Max. My previous and current Catalyst drivers fro X 1950
Pro PCI (PCIe I think) seem to cause problems. I've tried sveeral search
terms on the ATI site - any further suggestions? Thanks, Faustino

PS: it would appear that X1950 is post-Control Panel. I'll try uninstalling
Catalyst and starting again (cf ATI 737-20429: Installing the Display
Drivers). (The otherpossibity, memory problems in my other thread, has been
discounted by windiag.) Faustino the Ignorant
