External Monitor Compatibility.

I would like to add a 20" external monitor to my Acer 2451WLMi laptop.
My laptop has a max resolution of 1280 x 800.
If I were to buy a monitor with a resolution of 1680 x 1050 native, would it be compatible or does the resolution on the external monitor have to be 1280 x 800 or less?
I'm not to sure what "native" means and could not find any clear answers about all this on Google.
My laptop has settings for an external monitor.
System: Acer 2451WLMi
Windows XP Home SP2
Explorer 7
Intel Celeron M 410 1.46 GHz
Data Bus Speed 533 MHz
Display: ATI radeon xpress 200M series
MS_19.7[Monitor] (19.7"vis)
512MB RAM
60GB hard drive
Max Resolution 1280x800 (WXGA)

Thanks for any info on this!!!

"Native" - when describing an LCD monitor - means that is the resolution the
monitor was designed to show - any resolution higher or lower - may or may
not be 'clear' or look as well as that resolution on that monitor...
Usually, it also is the highest resolution said monitor will display.

Check under your Video Card settings and see if that Video card is capable
of the resolution of the monitor that you are thinking of purchasing.
Your Laptop Monitor has a resolution of 1280x800 produced by your video card
because that is optimal for that display
The manufacturer set it that way.
But your video card is capable of other resolutions..........
