16:9 Video saves halfway between 16:9 and 4:3

Hello, all.
I've filmed a clip in 16:9 mode on my camcorder and transferred it to
Windows Movie Maker. In Options, I have it set to save at 16:9.

The video plays at the size it should in Windows Movie Maker, but when I
save the video file and play it in BSplayer or Windows Media Player, it's
halfway between 4:3 and 16:9 (I can tell because BS lets me page between
aspect ratios: 4:3, Original, 16:9, and Original is right in the middle of
them.

Any help would be most appreciated (and soon, because I'm making these
videos to send to my girlfriend while she's on a trip to Hawaii)!

Also, I get a "Windows Movie Maker has encountered an error and has to
close" message whenever I try to add a video effect.

I'm assuming you're saving to DV-AVI or WMV (NTSC) of 720x480... a file size
half way between standard 640x480 and widescreen 856x480.

Movie Maker puts a tag in the file telling the player that it's widescreen
or standard... in addition to making the file at the appropriate pixel
dimensions.

The players use the tag to display it appropriately, or the pixel
dimensions... seems like yours isn't looking at the tag.

On the closing issue, see the Problem Solving > Crashes and Hangs page of my
website.
