137 GB hard drive limit

I have installed windows XP (original release) on my new hard drive. I have
downloaded every possible upgrade from the MS site. Yet, my 300 GB drive
still only has a limit of 137GB. When I look for an answer on teh MS site, it
says I need to first load SP1, but SP1 is no longer available. What do I do?

Load SP2 - the service packs are cumulative.

If you wanted all the space for your C drive - you need to integrate SP1 or
2 into the original installation media per instructions (or applications)
found on the Internet easily using Google.

Use AutoStreamer to create an install CD that integrates your copy of
Windows XP with SP1 or SP2 , it easy to use and for the most part self
explanatory.

Your BIOS also needs to support 48Bit LBA to go beyond the 137GB barrier.

It's a bit late now, but you install SP2. And you'll need to slipstream
your CD to be able to create the larger partition.

As XP can only create and delete partitions, you cannot now, using the XP
tools and without starting over in this different way, make one large
partition. You may be able to change the partition size with 3rd party
tools. Back up first.

Download the SP2 full install (266 meg), and Autostreamer, and update your
XP CD. Note that some OEM releases do not allow slipstreaming.

You need SP1 *or* SP2 to support more than 137GB. Since SP2 includes
all of SP1, and since you *should* have the latest service pack,
that's what you should install.

And by the way, you have *not* downloaded every possible upgrade from
the MS site. Many of the upgrades require that SP2 be installed first,
so they are not even offered to you.

It's less of an issue these days, but you should also be aware that if
your computer is old enough, there can be a hardware limitation that
also prevents using more than 137GB. You need a motherboard with a
BIOS and controller that supports 48-bit LBA (or alternatively, an
add-in controller card that does). If the computer is very old, it may
not have this support.

Start/run/regedit
(if unsure export registry for safety)
select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
navigate to system/services/atapi/parameters or
system/currentcontrolset/services/atapi/parameters
right click for new
Select Dword name it EnableBigLba (take note of case)
set value to 1
end regedit
reboot

Sound a bit complicated but do one thing at a time and make sure you do it right
and you will get the correct size of disk
