137 GB limit 48bit Logical Block Addressing?

Hi,

I hope someone can help me !

I am running self made computer, WIN XP Professional, Service Pack 2. I
have internal HDD 120 GB Maxtor partioned several times. I have external
OneTouch Maxtor HDD 250 GB partitioned several times. WIN XP sees both
drives and has no limitation problem.

I have an ADS external HDD USB kit which has worked for drives under 137 GB.
Now when I put a drive over 137, WIN XP can't see the portion over 127 or 137
GB. I bought a new Western Digital but their service was horrible and they
kept saying "The symptoms you are seeing are a result of the computer's
motherboard or Operating System not supporting 48bit Logical Block Addressing"

Now, I have a Maxtor 160 GB internal in the ADS external kit. Still, it
only sees up to 127. What is the problem with WIN XP? How to fix??

Does the "kit" support drives above 137GB? It must or your computer will
not see over that.

Try updating your BIOS.

Ummmm ..... I don't know. And with that as an answer, I doubt it. It's
several years old. While I was afraid that might have something to do with my
problem, I also thought, what difference would that make? Basically, the kit
is just a cable connected to the HDD, some connection changing it to USB, and
that USB to the computer.

If this really makes a difference, do I need to buy a new kit? What would I
need to know in order to buy the right type?

Hi WTC,

I (think I hope) my BIOS is fine. My computer is running on a new
motherboard which is an ASUS P4P800 SE. The internal 250 GB Maxtor is seen
by the BIOS, so I don't know why an external USB kit holding a 160 GB
internal Maxtor wouldn't be seen when it boots to WIN XP. Am I incorrect?

I do not if this will help you, but do you have USB devices enabled in your
bios?

It's the chipset that limits it. They still sell these old boxes - ones
that only support drives smaller than 137GB:

(Notice: Takes IDE Hard Drives (137GB capacity limit) )

However, the kits that support more are the common ones these days.. Just
look for their maximum supported drive size.

Maxtor have a utility for large drives. I think it requires
SP2 or maybe just SP1. Anyway it is available from their site.

:

Are you patched at least to SP1?
BIOS - Advanced USB Mass Storage (or some shit), set to Emulation Type
Auto?

The controllers in use for the device have to support 48 bit LBA to
allow a unique address for each sector of the drive. (and you need XP
at SP1 or later). The old 28 bit only can hold 256M sectors - 128
GBytes. It is likely your BIOS handles the 48 bit LBA but the
controllers for the USB kit do not. Try the drive on an internal IDE
connection and see
