I recently installed on my notebook a 160GB hard disk. The BIOS recogniuzes
only 137 GB but XP recognizes all 160GB. I heard of that '137GB boundary'
problem but my notebook is a bit od so there is no longer newer BIOS. Now I
partition this harddisk to only 130GB something and leave the rest 30GB
unused. My question is, in my case, that Xp can see all 160GB but BIOS can
see only 137GB, can I use safely all 160GB in XP? Thanks!

I have a similar situation with an older PC, BIOS does not support 48Bit LBA
(Large drives), so can only partition up to 137GB.
Disk Manager can see the remaining drive space as 'Unallocated' but can not
partition or format it.

In my case XP itself recog's 160GB, I don't need DM etc. But I wonder if I
can use those unallocated space safely.

Oops, meant to say XP's (SP2) own 'Disk Management' utility does see the
full drive size but can only use the first 137GB.

I think XP itself can already partition the full capacity but I just don't
know if it is safe, as BIOS doesn't know how to manage those beyond 137GB.

How old is this computer? BIOS upgrade?

Using Disk Management to change partition sizes desrpys the contents of
the partition.

This is an '03 notebook and there will be no newer BIOS.
I am not talking about changing partition size. I have software that can
manage this without destroying data. My question is whether it is safe to
use those beyond 137GB portion in XP safely. In other words, in my case only
XP has 48bit LBA (my BIOS is only 28bit so sees maximum 137GB), is it enough
to use >137GB disks?
