when i boot my windows XP i get the following

I have a similar problem on a friends PC. He brought round to mine for
me to look at, and after umming and ahing for a while, we decided a
full format of the h/drive and a fresh install of XP might help. This
was fine, until either SP2 went on, or one of the mobo drivers were
installed (can't fully identify which went on first), and lo and
behold, same problem. Might boot first time, might take 20-odd
attempts. Pulled all the innards out of the sytem and rebuilt, using
just 1 bit of memory at a time (3 x 512 in total, same brand etc), but
still no joy. Now considering a new HD or motherboard, but any help
appreciated!
