100% CPU usage with explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe

I have been unable to use windows explorer and internet
explorer for the past week. Every time I try to start one
of these (eg, my computer, network connections, internet
explorer), the task manager tells me the application is
using 100% of CPU and the application will not open. I can
use task manager to shut down the process for either of
these, and then I can start explorer.exe to get my task bar
and desktop back, but I cannot open an explorer windows.

Can anyone suggest any things I should check for, or some
way of "resetting" these applications? It is becoming very
frustrating to try to resolve this problem since I am in
Europe now and without being able to even open network
connections, I can't even connect my laptop to a wireless
or ethernet network, or to a dialup ISP. Alternatively, in
a pinch, is there anyway to enable a network connection
without going through windows explorer?

Thanks.

How are you with regard to checking for viruses and spyware. Do you have a
Firewall installed?

You should update your virus definitions and run full anti-virus scan. If
you do not have anti-virus programme installed you can run a free scan from
the internet. Try this link:

Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download Adaware and update
Reference file from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and use it to remove parasites.

If you are still encountering problem look again at the CPU usage. Task
Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility Process
Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that little bit extra
towards seeing what the running processes represent. For further information
about Process Explorer see here:

I have followed some of your suggestions in the past. My
problem now is that I am unable to connect to the internet.
First of all, I can't open network connections to enable
or setup any of the current connections (I have ethernet,
wireless and dialup possibilities). Secondly, even if I
could connect I can't open internet explorer. I have
access to machines running Linux, but because of the way
the network is set up here it is not possible to transfer
files easily to my dysfunctional laptop. If I could even
enable the ethernet network connection then I believe I
could email downloads, etc. to my laptop.

Bit of a problem. I have used spybot to scan and clean
adware since I ran into the problem. But I have not been
connected to any network for a couple of days prior to
encountering this problem.

Thanks,
Brenda.

Brenda, I'd suggest take a back up of vital documents and
then try a reinstall if you have disks.

Otherwise can you speak to a technical bod at your ofices?

I had this problem with iexplore and explorer running 100%.

I downloaded and ran mozilla instead of I.E. now. Its been 3 days and
I've not had a single problem since then.

I ran norton, spybot, ad aware, hijack this, cwshredder.

I think there is a problem on some laptops with windows xp sp1 and
explorer. The only solution that has worked for me is using mozilla
instead of ie.

I used to get the problem 2 to 3 times a day and had to reboot. Its
been 3 days now and i'm keeping my fingers crossed!
