100% cpu usage by msdtc.exe

I get 100% cpu usage by msdtc.exe on system startup -- the
service remains in the 'starting' state and memory use
goes up to 246MB. It is a relatively new install --
nothing is on the PC except w2k server, ie6, mcafee
viruscan, and all the latest service packs, security
patches, and updates (I mean ALL the ones listed by
windows update). It has happened a couple of times, and
the only fix I've found is to totally reinstall
everything. W2k won't let me 'upgrade' w2k server to w2k
server, so I lose all my settings. Can someone help me so
that it won't happen again?

The major problem child in this scenario, is likely to be the
mcafee viruscan autoprotection.

See if you can start up with this service disabled.
