100% CPU error in XP but not in 98SE

Dan W.

I am posting this in three newsgroups because it is really strange how
XP Professional handles things that it has trouble reading. I was just
chilling out and listening to some Itunes from the XP Professional side
of my computer, browsing using Mozilla Firefox (2 pages), had an
Internet Explorer page open and viewing a Word document and the computer
indeed went up to the 100% CPU (Central Processing Unit) usage. This is
a really annoying glitch in XP Professional that does not occur in at
least my edition of 98 Second Edition and I have not seen it on the 98
Second Edition computers that I use at work. On the other hand, I have
seen this error on my computer, on computers at work and have heard from
my friend Jon who is an A+ certified professional that this frequently
happens at his work. 98SE slows down when it drops below 10% system
resources but it does not have the stupid 100% CPU usage. I discovered
that it was Internet Explorer at the msn.com website that caused the
problem but this never happens on the 98SE side of my computer. I have
not yet seen it happen in my test configuration of Windows Vista
Ultimate 32 bit edition with build 5728 either. I appreciate your
comments on fixing this annoying problem and I hope Microsoft fixes XP
Professional to stop having this CPU issue ASAP.

Do you SP2 installed in your XP. Is your system fully Patched. When the CPU
goes 100% check SVCHOST.EXE, it might be consuming all the CPU.

Yes, I have XP SP2 installed and the latest updates with XP
Professional. My system is fully patched. Thanks for the post. I will
check SVCHOST.EXE for errors and I am going to Google this right now to
figure out what it does. The issue is that it mainly seems to stay at
100% CPU cycle reading when it cannot read something and I have been
unable to easily end that task either. At least in 98SE, when something
freezes up, I have found that I can hit ctrl-alt-del and end the
process. I have another post about this linked with the Windows Vista
newsgroup because this does not seem to be an issue in Vista either --
at least I have not seen it happening yet with my testing of Windows
Vista Ultimate 32 bit -- build first 5600 then 5728 and hopefully
Microsoft will have some more builds before the release to manufacturing
for Vista because Vista still needs more testing to be fully ready for
prime time --- retail market -- It is indeed shaping out to be an
awesome operating system in my opinion and has amazing potential. I
really appreciate the upgraded security that Vista has as well. BTW,
sorry for the other post and the confusion, I did not realize anyone was
replying to this post so I got too impatient and posted another post.
It is probably best to choose one but the other post does have more
details and is linked to Windows Vista general newsgroup so maybe it is
better to use that one and/or add this one to the Windows Vista
newsgroup. <smile>

There is for sure something wrong either with IE or Winword. I suggest you to
start WinXP in Safe Mode (keep pressing F8 at bootup) selct Safe mode with
networking. Then use the internet using IE , use the system as your normal
practice and if hangs then press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Do you have any anti Virus? If not then download any 30 days trial version
also,

I have fully scanned with antivirus and antispyware programs. Glen, the
system CPU program you suggested has gotten as high as 57% in 98SE with
multiple programs running. There is no problem on this side. I will
download and install the program on the XP Pro. side as well.

Try installing a decent antivirus like Mcafee and scan it for virusses and
spyware, it wil fix the problem,if not the system files are too damaged,so
format and reinstall, and get proper security

I would suggest that McAfee isn't really a "decent antivirus", not in the
version they put out for home users, anyway.

Anything *but* McAfee and Norton is my recommendation, though some of the
others aren't much better. Personally, I've used and can recommend ETrust
(Computer Associates) and Avast.
